John, Since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in its 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder, the freedom to vote in America has been eroding. State legislatures have introduced a variety of voter suppression bills, extreme gerrymandering, voter roll purges, and polling location closures targeting voters of color. The right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy, and Congress must take action to protect it. That’s why we need the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, two transformative pieces of legislation designed to restore the Voting Rights Act and make voting easier and more accessible than ever before. Sign the petition: Defend and expand the right to vote. Together, the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would combat the nationwide wave of voter suppression efforts and ensure that every eligible American can freely exercise their constitutional right to vote in several ways, including: - Establishing nationwide voting standards to improve ballot access;
- Eliminating partisan and race-based gerrymandering;
- Defending elections from foreign influence; and
- Enhancing campaign finance transparency measures to deter dark money.
With the 2024 election already underway, Congress must act now. By passing both the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, we can ensure that every American, no matter their background or where they live, can participate freely and equally in our democracy. Tell Congress: Pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. In solidarity, Free Speech For People |
