Friends,
I’m thrilled to share with you that I’ll be joined at tonight’s State of the Union address by Elizabeth Carr. Elizabeth was the first person in the United States born via IVF — in Norfolk, Virginia in 1981.
The Carr family’s journey with IVF is a point of pride for Virginia. Thanks to their generosity in sharing their story with the world, generations of families struggling with infertility have found hope and inspiration.
In the wake of the Alabama Supreme Court’s extreme ruling that puts IVF at risk — and the GOP’s growing obsession with controlling women’s bodies — it’s more important than ever that we commit to protecting access to IVF across the country.
(Consider reading Elizabeth’s recent interview that shares her perspective on the Alabama ruling. I found it a very poignant read.) [[link removed]]
In the Senate, I’ve proudly cosponsored the Access to Family Building Act to protect IVF access and the Veteran Families Health Services Act of 2023 to expand fertility treatments covered under servicemembers’ and veterans’ health care. I’ve also introduced the bipartisan Reproductive Freedom for All Act to protect women’s rights to access abortion and contraception.
But the fact is, we’re facing an uphill battle on all three of those pieces of legislation from an increasingly extreme Republican Party whose policies antagonize women and reproductive freedoms at every turn.
If we want to safeguard IVF and other reproductive care, securing Democratic victories in this November’s elections is critical. [[link removed]]
I look forward to hearing from President Biden tonight with Elizabeth Carr by my side.
Thanks for your support, as always.
