Reproductive healthcare is once again under attack in Missouri.
This time the target is Planned Parenthood, which operates clinics throughout the state serving communities that have historically lacked reliable access to healthcare, including family planning and reproductive healthcare. On Tuesday, the Missouri House voted to defund Planned Parenthood in our state, less than a week after Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey also filed a lawsuit against the organization.
Here’s what it would mean to defund Planned Parenthood: cancer screenings, routine preventive care, and contraception would effectively be cut off for many who would normally not have access to this kind of care . As affordable primary healthcare has gotten scarcer, especially for the under-insured or uninsured, clinics like Planned Parenthood have filled an absolutely crucial need for millions of women, men, and families in need of care.
What we are seeing is an ideological assault on women’s healthcare, disproportionately harming low-income communities (nearly 20% of Planned Parenthood patients in Missouri rely on Medicaid) and individuals with limited options for healthcare providers.
We should be doing more, not less, to help people access healthcare. And most of all, we need to send a message loud and clear that politicians need to get out of our exam rooms and keep their personal agenda out of our private lives.
This issue will now be taken up by the State Senate, where the Democratic caucus will fight hard to block it. If we flip districts like SD-15, the district I am running to represent, we will have more voices fighting back against the rampant extremism that is systematically dismantling the reproductive rights of Missourians.
