BACKGROUNDER: PragerU’s ties to white
supremacy, horrific anti-LGBTQ record
Following the mass shootings in El Paso
and Dayton, the digital, right-wing nonprofit PragerU released a video
that falsely claims President Donald Trump did not use the phrase
“very fine people” to describe white nationalists in 2017. The outlet
also housed a controversial interview with Mario Lopez in which the TV
personality made anti-trans remarks. But the hateful rhetoric doesn’t
end there. GLAAD exposes the truth behind the hate.
Variety salutes Philanthropist of the
Year and LGBTQ activist Ariadne Getty
Last week, GLAAD Board Member Ariadne
Getty was named Variety’s
Philanthropist of the Year for her LGBTQ advocacy work with
organizations like GLAAD and the Los Angeles LGBT Center. Getty has
continued to be a generous benefactor of GLAAD and last year announced
a $15 million multi-year lead gift to launch the GLAAD Media
Institute. The Ariadne Getty Foundation and GLAAD also join forces
each year to host LGBTQ programming during the World Economic Forum
annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland and ensure that LGBTQ issues are
priorities for the world leaders in attendance.

It’s a ‘missed opportunity’ that not one
LGBTQ question was asked in last week’s Democratic Presidential
Debates
GLAAD was on the ground in Detroit for
the second in a series of 2020 Democratic Primary debates that aired
on CNN last week, and the moderators didn’t
ask any LGBTQ-related questions. “Omitting any questions
about reversing the dangerous attacks President Trump has made against
LGBTQ Americans since taking office is a missed opportunity that needs
to be corrected in tomorrow’s debate and across future election
coverage,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “At a
time when the Trump Administration tries to erase the LGBTQ community
at every turn, the media should make LGBTQ-specific issues a priority
by asking each presidential candidate how they will fight for and
protect LGBTQ people across the nation.”
One in three LGBTQ gamers have faced
identity-based harassment in multiplayer games, new report shows
A report from the Anti-Defamation
League finds that 74 percent of adult gamers have
experienced harassment. 35 percent of LGBTQ players have faced
harassment based on their identity. This comes at a time when GLAAD is
starting work with leaders in the video game industry to create safer
and inclusive spaces. You
can read more about the study here.
