In just a moment, I’m going to ask if you’ll chip in to help protect and expand our majority in the State House, but first I want to share my story.
Before I was the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, House Democratic Leader, or House Democratic Caucus Chair, I became a public defender fresh out of law school. Here’s a photo from my graduation:
Growing up in Southwest Philly, I was raised to value community and justice. I saw firsthand what a dire lack of community resources and an out-of-touch justice system was doing to our neighbors. My experiences and those around me shaped my values — integrity, equity, compassion, and putting people first — which inspired me to begin my career as a public defender, eventually leading me to where I am today.
As Speaker of the House, I’ll keep fighting with everything I have to protect our communities and champion our values in Pennsylvania — but I can’t win these battles alone.
