On April 2, you can help determine who will be on the ballot for the presidential election by participating in New York’s Presidential Primary. New York has Closed Primaries for the Presidential election, meaning you must be registered to vote in a given party to participate in the party’s primary.

New York’s voter turnout is historically low. In local elections, when voter turnout is especially low, every vote can make a huge impact. If you have an opinion on what should be done, from school board elections to judicial selections, then voting is the first step to making that happen.

The last day to register or change your voter registration is March 23.

The Center was proud to be part of the 53rd Annual NYS Association of Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislators, Inc. Annual Legislative Conference in Albany, New York. We worked with community partners, leaders, and activists to make space for critical needs of the LGBTQ+ community in New York State and discuss policy solutions to support them, particularly those of BIPOC communities.

Special thanks to In Our Own Voices, The NEW Pride Agenda, The New York Transgender Advocacy Group, Queer Inclusivity Social, Equality New York, and Caribbean Equality Project for helping make this a success.

The Gender Identity Respect Dignity and Safety Act (GIRDS) is a new bill that would require state and local correctional facilities to house TGNCNB people consistently with their gender identities, and be addressed by their correct names and pronouns. Additionally, it guarantees access to commissary items, clothing, and other materials consistent with gender identities.
