Jack, enormous news in the battle for the Senate: Kyrsten Sinema just announced she will NOT seek re-election this fall.
You probably know Sinema all too well. After being elected in Arizona as a Democrat back in 2018, she routinely sided with Republicans against Democratic priorities—most famously sinking a vote to increase the minimum wage after checking in with Mitch McConnell and then delivering a melodramatic thumbs-down gesture on the Senate floor. Then, in late 2022, she abandoned the Democratic Party altogether and became an independent.
Knowing we could do much better, Daily Kos endorsed Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego for Senate last year. Gallego is a progressive champion who has been running a strong campaign, but until today there was an ever-present threat that Sinema could run again and let Republican Kari Lake, a Trump sycophant who lost the 2022 race for Arizona governor, squeak through in a three-way race. Now Gallego has a clear shot in a one-on-one with Lake.
Let me make this brutally clear: The Senate majority hinges on this race in Arizona. Dems have a razor-thin majority and can't afford to lose a single seat in 2024.
