Friends,
Last week, in the wake of the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos are entitled to legal personhood, Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith blocked legislation that would have protected access to in-vitro fertilization nationwide.
When 42% of American women have used fertility treatments or know someone who has, my Republican colleagues must realize their opposition to IVF is unpopular. Many GOPers tried to preemptively absolve themselves by tweeting their support of fertility treatments after the Alabama decision was announced.
Tweets are one thing, but votes are another. When the rubber hit the road, Senate Republicans stood in the way of protecting IVF for Americans. So much for being Pro-Family.
It’s hard to convey my outrage about this latest attack on reproductive freedom. But I think Senator Tammy Duckworth, who gave birth to two daughters thanks to IVF treatment, said it best; “It's a little personal when a majority male state Supreme Court suggests that people like me who became pregnant with the help of modern medicine should be in jail cells and not nurseries.”
The Republican position is callous and cruel. Their hypocrisy adds insult to injury. My position is clear – I’ll always support reproductive freedom, and that includes standing up for parents who rely on IVF.
– Jim
