We have opened a new temporary housing shelter at Silverado Park,
located at 1545 W. 31st St., to provide additional temporary housing
to persons experiencing homelessness in the City during the ongoing
COVID-19 pandemic.
This expands on the shelter capacity that is growing at our North
Long Beach location and our Hayes Ave. location West of Downtown.
The 24/7 Silverado shelter will house approximately 50 people in
the main room, with appropriate social distancing space between each
cot, and seven additional people in a separate isolation room to be
used as needed.
A mandatory health screening will be provided to all people prior
to entry into the shelter, and people will be encouraged to follow the
shelter in place model to maximize safety for shelter residents. In
order to receive services, individuals must utilize one of the three
shuttle services to the shelter and can be picked up by provided
transportation at: 14th Street Park, Bixby Park and the Multi-Service
Center. Walk-ups are not permitted.
The Silverado Park shelter will offer triage assessments, meals,
snacks, recreation with social distancing and additional social
service resources as needed.
Funding for the shelters is provided by the State of California’s
emergency aid to local governments, issued by Governor Newsom
specifically to protect Californians experiencing homelessness.
Additionally, the Winter Shelter will move from its current
location at 1718 Hayes Ave. to a larger facility at the old North Long
Beach Library, located at 5571 Orange Ave., to comply with social
distancing.
The new location will provide shelter to 80 additional people who
otherwise would not have shelter during this time.
Once the Winter Shelter is fully moved to its new location, the
existing facility at Hayes will be transitioned into another temporary
shelter location operated by the City of Long Beach and will provide
shelter to approximately 60 to 70 additional people.
Other locations, including motels and other public spaces in the
City, are also being explored as possible temporary shelter locations
in an extensive effort to provide as much shelter to those in need as
possible.
