1) The Kids (and Greg Abbott) KO Teacher Unions
Schoolchildren were the big winners in Texas primary elections yesterday as a handful of anti-school choice incumbents were sent packing by voters.

Congrats to Governor Greg Abbott, who backed 14 challengers to House Republicans in these primary races after they killed his signature bill to establish universal education savings accounts. The Gunfight At The Teacher Union Corral ended in a decisive victory for school choice supporters and the chances are much better now that Abbott’s historic bill will become law next year.

Only six of the 16 anti-school-choice incumbents who ran for re-election won. Six lost outright and four were forced into May 28 runoffs. Traditionally, incumbents enter runoffs as underdogs because a majority of voters have already expressed themselves against them.

The outright losers included Travis Clardy and Hugh Shine, who were caught ([link removed]) illegally begging school administrators to provide staff to turn out the vote for them.

An additional five seats were vacated by anti-school-choice incumbents who chose to retire. Abbott-backed challengers have won two of those and forced two more into runoffs. The fifth will go to a recount.

The Abbott surge even saw Dade Phelan, the powerful Texas House Speaker, who has often cooperated with Democrats in slowing down school choice, trail a conservative opponent. He will face a runoff. In addition, several GOP incumbents on the State Board of Education lost or now face a runoff.

Overall, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram concluded: "Abbott turned the whole House upside down and shook it until a record number of lawmakers fell out."

Hopefully now renegade Republicans around the country will get the message: school choice and fixing our schools with competition is the highest policy priority for every state.

2) Euro-sclerosis Is Back
At least one of Biden’s claims on the economy IS true. The U.S. does have the world’s strongest economy today. Or maybe we should rephrase that and say we have the least bad economy. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

The U.S. economy is growing at slightly above two percent, which is mediocre, but we look like a gazelle compared to three of our major international competitors – Britain, Japan, and Germany. All three of these countries have slipped into mild recession territory. Britain is skating perilously close to recession at the end of 2023, with effectively zero growth for the last six months.

This table from analyst Richard Salsman, who published the Capitalist Advisor, shows the miserable performance of late.

GDP Growth
Euro-sclerosis appears to be back in full force. Why? We think one factor is the looney over-investment in green energy. It’s crippling Germany’s economy – once the pillar of industrial and engineering might. It turns out you can’t be much of an industrial power if you try to build cars, steel, and buildings with wind power.

Our advice to Congress: don’t chase the losers. Green energy is one of the greatest economic flops of modern times. It’s almost as bad as socialism.

3) University of Virginia Spends $20 Million Per Year on DEI
Our friends at Open the Books obtained the documents, and the DEI business is booming in Charlottesville.

Now you know why tuition is so expensive.

Is Governor Glenn Youngkin paying attention to what DeSantis did in Florida?

4) Redraw the Lines
One of our projects at CTUP is called “Redraw the Lines.” There are at least eight to 10 counties that are in blue states and are contiguous to another state, that wants to join their red state neighbor. They should be permitted to leave the state they are in if the residents favor the move. This is about citizens‘ right to choose who they want to be governed by.

This is happening in most cases because rural residents of Blue states such as Illinois, Maryland, Colorado, Oregon, and California don’t share the values and ideology of the big blue cities that dominate state politics. They want to merge with more similar states on their border. We know of no blue counties that want to leave red states, but there may be a few.

This movement is not to be taken lightly and is an indication of how misgoverned some states are. To secede from a state would require approval by the legislatures in the two affected states and Congress. There is historical precedent for this.

5) Biden Admin Quickly Reverses Ban on Iconic V-J Day Photo After Memo Leaks
Last week, an assistant undersecretary at the VA sent a truly absurd memorandum, directing all VA health facilities to remove the iconic photo of a sailor kissing a nurse the day victory over Japan was announced in World War II.

The memo was so absurdly over the top that it looked like it might be fake:

But the VA confirmed the memo was authentic and said Secretary Denis McDonough officially rescinded it yesterday – after the story became public.

Here's the AP headline:

We wonder if the photo had been a man kissing a man whether the Biden Administration would have found it objectionable! Almost certainly not.

We are living in very strange times.
