Hi John,
Please read this urgent email. It’s short. Politico is reporting that Senator Lindsey Graham (R - S.C.) plans to bring a package of social media bills that include EARN IT and STOP CSAM to a vote this week.1
Like KOSA, these bills threaten privacy and freedom of expression rather than actually protect vulnerable people, including children, from the harms of Big Tech.2 Both bills would slough off Section 230 protections and threaten encryption, as companies try to avoid liability for content on their platforms.3,4
Although Senator Graham’s push will likely be blocked this time, his efforts show that these lawmakers will try whatever they can to sneak through harmful social media bills. We have to match their relentlessness. With your help, we can block bad internet bills—and advocate for good ones too. Will you support our advocacy for sensible tech legislation today?
Without your support, we simply can’t run the kind of massive grassroots campaigns and focused D.C. advocacy efforts needed to stop these bad bills. The best way to support our work is with a monthly donation (of any amount!), so we can spend less time fundraising and more time on advocacy and movement-building. Your monthly support lets us move quickly when we need to, because every time one of these bills rears its ugly head we’ll have the resources to:
-
Connect thousands of calls and letters to lawmakers
-
Activate a Bad Internet Bills coalition, made up of civil society and community groups, to amplify our collective voice for sensible tech legislation
-
Pressure lawmakers to do the right thing for everyday people, connecting the inside and outside game needed to affect change
