Here are some recent updates.
* Disqualified Oregon lawmakers won't be added back to the Republican primary ballot, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled ([link removed]) . A group of GOP lawmakers were barred from running for reelection by the secretary of state for having 10 or more unexcused absences from the Legislature.
* Today is Super Tuesday, and more than a dozen states will hold primary elections.
+ Among them is Alabama, which will host its first election under the new congressional map where Black voters have the opportunity to elect candidates of choice in two districts. The map is the result ([link removed]) of lawsuits from Black voters who claimed that the prior map violated the Voting Rights Act.
+ Polling hours are extended ([link removed]) to 9:30 p.m. EST at the Brighton Senior Citizens Center's polling place in Jefferson County, Alabama after the wrong ballots were delivered to the precinct.
* A provision of Florida’s new voter suppression law restricting who can assist voters in requesting mail-in ballots will head ([link removed]) to trial on April 1.
+ On Friday, in a separate case, the same judge held ([link removed]) that the Florida secretary of state is permanently prohibited from enforcing Senate Bill 7050’s noncitizen voter registration assistance provision. That decision was reiterated by the judge in today’s order.
* The Maine House passed ([link removed]) a bill to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, a workaround to the Electoral College where participating states pledge to award all of their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the popular vote.
* The Vet Voice Foundation and the Mississippi Alliance for Retired Americans’ motion to intervene was granted. The organizations will join the lawsuit ([link removed]) to defend Mississippi’s absentee ballot receipt deadline from a challenge brought by the Republican National Committee and the Mississippi GOP.
* The U.S. Supreme Court's decision to keep former President Donald Trump on the ballot was an unsurprising blow to democracy and the Constitution. But it also reveals some important rifts within the Court. Read Marc’s thoughts on the decision here ([link removed]) .
