John,
I am very happy to share with you that the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act has officially passed the House of Representatives last night..
This $2 trillion package will provide direct payments to Americans, expand unemployment insurance -- including for gig workers -- and provide assistance to small businesses who are struggling to stay afloat. It also includes help for our hospitals and the medical professionals who are on the front lines of fighting this pandemic.
Like any compromise, this isn’t a perfect bill. But it was heartening to see Democrats and Republicans come together to deliver much needed relief to the American people. The only way we are going to make it through this crisis is together, and the passage of this bill symbolizes that spirit of cooperation.
I regret I was not ultimately able to vote for this stimulus because, like so many other Americans, I was under a doctor-ordered quarantine after coming into contact with an individual who tested positive for COVID-19. While isolated, I have remained hard at work fighting for all Americans who are facing anxiety and uncertainty during this crisis.
And even with the passage of this bill, that fight continues. Our nation will not emerge whole from this pandemic unless we stand up for all Americans , including our senior citizens, those with pre-existing conditions, those who are now unemployed or underemployed and cannot afford rent or basic needs. I promise to keep fighting for all of you.
With thanks,
