** 'Stop the Bleed:' Norfolk Boys & Girls Club, Sentara teach grade-schoolers life-saving techniques

In an age where we hear all too often about violence, school shootings and accidents, many people don't want that reality to scare kids. Now, some kids in Hampton Roads are learning how to act in those situations, empowering them to save lives. Grade-schoolers at the Grandy Village Boys and Girls Club in Norfolk practiced life-saving techniques with the help of Sentara trauma services as part of a "Stop the Bleed" presentation. "I learned how to save a human being," said Jessiah, a second grader.

"Why is it so important for you guys to learn this?" asked News 3 reporter Erika Craven.

"If one of my family got hurt, I could save them," said Jessiah.

The kids learned how to look for life-threatening bleeding, apply direct pressure, pack wounds and use a tourniquet. While it's fun right now, the practice is getting the kids ready for all kinds of serious situations.

“A car accident, school shooting or knives, something like that," explained third grader Armani Lunda.

It's so they feel empowered to help in the critical time someone might wait for emergency services.

According to STOP THE BLEED® resources, the primary reasons people don't help bleeding victims are that they don't know what to do and they don't want to hurt them.

Instructors said it only takes a short window of time, approximately three to five minutes, before a person can bleed out. That's why they hope to see more people picking up the basics.

"I think it's important to just make sure everyone can play a part in this lifesaving," said Jami Williams, injury prevention coordinator at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. "It's not just people overseas doing combat stopping the bleed. It's us here, it's not just EMS. It's something that everyone can do and apply to themselves."

She also told the kids that in an emergency, it's important to first make sure you're safe before determining if you can help others.

** Doctor stopped the bleed for a subway conductor who was slashed in neck

The doctor who rushed through an A train to help a subway conductor who had been slashed in the neck spoke exclusively to CBS New York on Friday. The conductor says the stranger saved his life and waited with him until first responders got there.

Doctors know while their life-saving efforts typically happen inside a hospital, sometimes they are tested out in the world, like down in the subway system.

Dr. Patrick McGrory, of NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, was on a subway train just when he was needed most.

The violent attack on a train conductor happened shortly after 3:30 Thursday morning as a train pulled into the Rockaway Avenue-Fulton Street station.

McGrory became a lifesaver for the man operating his train.

"[The conductor] announced that he needed medical attention, that he'd been stabbed ... I headed down towards the conductor," McGrory said. "He was holding his neck, so I knew he was bleeding from his neck, so stop the bleed."

McGrory says he took the face mask the conductor was wearing and rolled it up to stop the bleeding.

"I had to use what I had," he said.

He estimated it was about 20-25 minutes of applying pressure to the wound before paramedics arrived. The conductor, now recovering with 34 stitches, says when he's feeling better he will get together again with the doctor.

McGrory said everybody can learn from the emergency medical techniques he used. "So I invite everybody to get on the web and find a Stop the Bleed program near you," he said.

In response to the increasing need for STOP THE BLEED® training, the U.S. Department of Defense has launched a new instructor licensing program for STOP THE BLEED®, tailored for police and other first responders.

The new instructor program is designed for police and other first responders seeking to teach their communities or organizations how to control severe bleeding until first responders arrive.

Police and other first responders can become licensed at no charge, and the online application process ([link removed]) can be completed in just a few minutes.

Police officers are highly effective instructors, thanks to their training in immediate response and their firsthand experience as first responders, STOP THE BLEED® states. Officers’ crisis communication skills, developed through police training, allow them to convey vital information clearly and effectively to the public. As instructors, they are adept at creating meaningful connections within their communities, enhancing trust and engagement, which in turn improves safety and national preparedness, according to STOP THE BLEED®.

** TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center STOP THE BLEED® training for Tennessee Polie

The TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center Trauma Department was invited to the Murfreesboro TN Police Department last week teach a STOP THE BLEED® Course to the Murfreesboro Police Department School Resource Officers.

By taking the course, these police officers are now qualified instructors and can teach these life saving skills to the staff at their schools.


** STOP THE BLEED® course for the personnel of the Judicial Security Service of the Dnipropetrovsk region

Last week, the instructors of the "MedHelp" MedHelp4you Educational and Training Center for the personnel of the territorial administration of the Court Protection Service in the Dnipropetrovsk Ukraine region conducted a practical training on the course of providing pre-medical assistance, which included the following: Personal safety, recognition of massive bleeding, stopping bleeding by packing the wound, and use of tourniquets to stop bleeding from the extremities. The staff of TU SSO in Dnipropetrovsk region express their gratitude to the instructors of the "MedHelp" Education and Training Center Serhiy LINNIK, Svitlana MAIDENKO, Nataliya SHKNAI for the training on pre-medical care conducted at a high professional level.


** STOP THE BLEED® for Mexican Red Cross Personnel

Roughly a month ago on February 4, STOP THE BLEED® training was carried out for Mexican Red Cross personnel from the Apaseo el Grande and San Luis de la Paz delegations, as well as for the Students of the Institute of Health Professionals of Queretaro. The Mexican Red Cross Local Delegation Apaseo el Grande is the first and only delegation at the state level that has its STOP THE BLEED® Educational License as a training center in hemorrhage control. This training was thanks to the efforts carried out by the Local Training Coordination and all its volunteers.
