I think a lot about the ripple effects of anti-abortion policies. When politicians put them in place, they know exactly what they're doing. The consequences are very intentional -- they want to take away our control over our bodies and lives, piece by piece. And everyone suffers as a result.

Take the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling that declared frozen embryos to be children -- this ruling is extremely scary for several reasons:

-- It goes beyond attacking abortion care and into complete control over how and if people choose to start families.
-- It proves without a doubt that attacking abortion affects all kinds of reproductive health care: three of the largest fertility clinics in Alabama have paused IVF treatments out of fear.
-- Alabama’s ruling is just the most recent example of the wide-reaching -- and harmful -- implications “personhood” laws have on fertility treatment, miscarriage treatment, and birth control.

But here's the bright side. More than 300 bills that protect or expand access to abortion have been filed in state legislatures in 39 states already this year. These include bills to protect the privacy of patients who seek abortion, “shield bills'' that protect abortion providers, and even constitutional amendments or bills that would protect the right to abortion in their state. These states are working to protect abortion, which protects all kinds of health care for everyone. That’s the kind of ripple effect we like to see.

I know it can feel like one step forward and two steps back, but we can’t forget -- the majority of Americans support the right to an abortion. And we’re not going anywhere.
