John --
With more than 74,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States, one state, in particular, is currently bearing the brunt of this outbreak.
New York State has more than half of all the confirmed cases in the country. Governor Andrew Cuomo reported today that more than 500 people have died in his state due to the coronavirus, and that number will continue to climb.
It is a tragic situation that is trying our healthcare system, our social safety nets and, especially, the people on the front lines of this pandemic. There’s much to be said about the stark need for Medicare for All, paid family leave and worker protections in terms of policymaking, but we also have to immediately deal with the healthcare emergency at hand.
That’s why we wanted to highlight the efforts of our BNCers in New York State today, as they work to arm our first responders with the tools they need, provide information and resources to their local communities and take immediate action to help the hardest-hit areas in the country. They are examples of how, in times of crisis, if we come together (digitally, for now), we can help each other through trying times.
