Friend — we don’t have time to celebrate yet.
SB 4, Governor Abbott's bill that would make crossing the border punishable by jail time and would give Texas law enforcement the power to deport migrants back to Mexico, set to go into effect today, was just temporarily halted by a federal judge. Although this is a current victory, we cannot stop the fight now.
Texas Governor Greg Abbot still has a lot of momentum behind SB 4 and plans to take it all the way to the Supreme Court. Abbot even said himself he “will not back down.” With the support of other Texas right-wing politicians and judges, this fight is not over.
Now, other states like Florida, Arizona, and Kansas are following Governor Abbott’s lead — trying to set up their own deportation machines and cause even more harm and trauma to immigrants than ICE and CBP already do.
We have to get loud now, and make our demands known before it’s too late. Our country should welcome immigrants and pass laws that allow us to live safely and thrive — not demonize us for cheap political points.
Will you chip in $10 or whatever you can to fuel our work for expansive and permanent protections for all immigrants and against racist and harmful laws passed by terrible politicians?
