Dear Friend,
Nobody should be forced to choose between paying off debt or paying for their daily needs.
That’s why NCLEJ is fighting to combat predatory and illegal debt collection practices.
State governments perversely use excessive fines, fees, and forfeitures to generate millions of dollars in revenue by targeting Black and Brown communities, low-income people, and immigrants. These excessive fines and fees feed into vicious cycles of debt, unemployment, and poverty for those communities targeted.
In New York, our advocacy helped reform Driver’s License suspension regulations so people don’t lose their licenses because of unpaid debt. We’re also fighting in Montgomery, Alabama against practices that have fueled a modern-day debtor’s prison, and we’re speaking out against abusive police practices that levy high fines and fees against Black and Brown people in Buffalo, New York.
We believe that state governments must be held accountable for targeting low-income people and communities of color with excessive fines and fees that they cannot afford to pay. If you agree, then add your name to show your support for our efforts. ([link removed])
Thank you,
Dennis Parker
