Dear Friend,
Recently, we’ve seen House Republicans act like petulant toddlers—throwing fits when they don’t get their way, not listening to directions, and prone to fighting. But we recently had one rare moment of bipartisanship that will benefit our families when the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan tax package that includes a temporary expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC). [1]
Now we just need the U.S. Senate to listen to directions and pass the bill by the end of March!
Here’s what’s going on: The bipartisan Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 (H.R. 7024) passed the U.S. House at the end of January in a 357-70 vote. Drafted by U.S. Representative Jason Smith (R) and Senator Ron Wyden (D), chairs of the powerful Ways and Mean and Finance Committees, this tax package will temporarily expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC). While the tax package also includes business tax credits, most importantly, it prioritizes a temporary expansion of the CTC for working families—something you and MomsRising have been fighting for for a long time!
Now it’s up to the U.S. Senate to take action! Despite bipartisan support in the Senate as well, a small group of Republican leaders are currently holding up the bill and trying to weaken the number of families who can receive the expanded CTC—all while making absolutely no changes to the business tax breaks. [2] Expanding the CTC is critical: It allows parents to do things like afford childcare so they can work and take care of their families. We know our families need this money and they need it now. If the U.S. Senate passes this bipartisan bill by the end of March, families can start accessing this money THIS tax season.
This is why we need to turn up the volume and the pressure on our Senators and let them know we are expecting them to take action on the CTC right away!
The letter we are sending to members of Congress states the following:
"We urge you to immediately expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC) by voting YES on the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 (H.R. 7024).
There are currently 19 million children excluded from the full credit because of the structure of the CTC. H.R. 7024 would benefit our economy and about 16 million children, more than 80 percent of the roughly 19 million children in families excluded from the full credit because their family incomes are too low.
This bipartisan bill would be a tremendous step toward allowing parents to work, raise their families, and contribute to our economy. Please pass it immediately."
Why is this tax package so important right now? Because there are currently 19 million children excluded from the full credit because of the current structure of the CTC. [3] This new bipartisan tax proposal would lift families and the economy, including by boosting as many as 16 million children whose family incomes are too low to receive the current tax credit, including lifting 400,000 children above the poverty line in the first year. Passage of this CTC expansion would be a tremendous step in the right direction in giving parents the resources they need to work, raise their families, and contribute to our economy, and also reducing child poverty. We know much more needs to be done in the coming years to make sure the full expansion of the CTC is made permanent – and, in the meantime, this bill provides us the opportunity to help millions of families right now and build momentum for the next step in our fight to make our tax code more fair and equitable.
Let’s win on the CTC and make sure the U.S. Senate passes the expansion before the end of March. Sign our letter now and then forward this email to your friends and family so they can take action as well. The timing on this is critical!
Together we can make a difference and lift up all families!
