How Managers Can Do A Better Job Sharing The Bad News About Layoffs - Forbes (No paywall) The steady stream of layoffs following the Great Resignation has spilled into 2024 with about 186 tech companies cutting over 49,386 jobs this year, according to Layoffs.fyi. Although the CEO outlook for 2024 remains positive about the deployment of artificial intelligence, business transformations and mitigating expenses, it has come at the cost of the workforce in the United States.
Although employers are making relatively smaller cuts this year by staggering them, employees have been impacted across a wide range of sectors, including technology, gaming, finance, retail and media. Despite their optimism, C-suite executives—with pressure from investors—are being cautious and remaining cost-conscious.

WorkSchiff Led the ‘Nerd Caucus’ Before the Trump Era. Now He’s a Senate Favorite. And, to the frustration of the most liberal Democrats, he and his allies have shrewdly maneuvered to sideline the woman who was the biggest threat to his election, Representative Katie Porter, by spending a barrage of campaign funds to elevate a novice Republican candidate, the former baseball star Steve Garvey. WorkJack Teixeira Pleads Guilty to Leak of Pentagon Secrets The Massachusetts Air National Guardsman at the center of one of the most significant leaks of national-security documents in a decade pleaded guilty on Monday to posting dozens of highly classified intelligence records in an online chat group.

WorkInsiders Reveal Major Problems at Lab-Grown-Meat Startup Upside Foods - WIRED (No paywall) On July 1, five diners sat down at the counter of the Michelin-starred Bar Crenn in San Francisco for an unusual meal. They had won a competition to become the first customers in the US to eat cultivated meat—real animal cells grown in bioreactors instead of a living animal. For a nominal price of $1, they tucked into two pieces of a cultivated chicken fillet made by the California startup Upside Foods, one of only two companies cleared to sell cultivated meat in the US. “I thought it was delicious,” says Oscar Merino, one of the diners. “The taste and the texture was incredible.” Work

WorkWorkThe Supreme Court's Confused Ruling on the Trump Ballot Case The Supreme Court showed it can act with speed by allowing Trump to continue his presidential campaign and punching down states’ ability to disqualify insurrectionist candidates. Indeed, the Court showed it could do so even on hard constitutional questions. Its decision, however, only exacerbates questions about the Court’s reasons for acting—questions that will deepen doubts about the Justices’ even-handedness and freedom from partisan tugs. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkThe Supreme Court’s decision centers on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Other issues that arose during the briefings and arguments turned out not to be important in the Supreme Court’s handling of the issue. In particular, Mr. Trump’s legal team had argued that Section 3 did not apply to him on the theory that the phrase in the amendment “officer of the United States” should be interpreted as covering only appointed officials and not elected presidents. None of the justices embraced that reasoning. WorkWorkJoe Biden’s Superfans Think the Rest of America Has Lost Its Mind Ms. Russell and Ms. Staller are ardent, unreserved supporters of Mr. Biden — part of a small but dedicated group of Democratic voters who think that he is not merely the party’s only option against Donald J. Trump but, in fact, a great, transformative president who clearly deserves another four years in office. WorkFour Years Since California Declared a Covid Emergency Covid killed roughly 75,000 people in the country last year, when it was the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. It was even worse in 2021, when the virus killed 450,000 people and was the third leading cause of death. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkAmerican Airlines Orders 260 Planes From Airbus, Boeing and Embraer American does not expect to receive its first Max 10 planes until 2028, Mr. May said. The airline expects Boeing will be able to deliver those jets, but if the manufacturer fails to, Mr. May said, American has made arrangements to replace those deliveries with other Max models or Airbus planes. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkFrance makes abortion a constitutional right in historic Versailles vote Rightwing senators from the Républicains party voted against a first attempt to change the constitution in October 2022. Later that year, the French parliament voted to extend France’s legal limit for ending a pregnancy from 12 to 14 weeks, amid anger that thousands of women were forced to travel abroad each year to terminate pregnancies in countries including the Netherlands, Spain and the UK. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkIditarod musher kills moose after run-in with dog Race leader Jessie Holmes, who is a cast member of the National Geographic reality TV show about life in rural Alaska called \"Life Below Zero,\" had a moose encounter between those two checkpoints, but it\'s not clear if it was the same moose. WorkThe Broncos tried and failed with Russell Wilson, what's next? And what they do from here, not only at quarterback, but with the depth chart around him, will determine whether they can recapture franchise glory. It could also determine whether they\'ll be another lost soul staring into a glass at last call in remember-when mode, talking of past victories as they wonder, again, where it all went. WorkWorkThe all-playoff era team: The best CFB players of the past decade Honorable mentions: Purdue\'s Rondale Moore, Kansas State\'s Deuce Vaughn, San Diego State\'s Rashaad Penny, Penn State\'s Saquon Barkley, North Carolina\'s Ryan Switzer, Kentucky\'s Lynn Bowden Jr., Texas A&M\'s Christian Kirk, Ohio State\'s J.K. Dobbins, Alabama\'s Smith, Houston\'s Marcus Jones, Boise State\'s Avery Williams, Oklahoma\'s Joe Mixon and Memphis\' Darrell Henderson Jr. WorkWorkWorkMbappé, Luis Enrique feud shows that PSG are preparing for life without him Saying that though, on Friday evening in Monaco, Mbappé felt like he had to do something to express his mood. So instead of sitting on the bench for the second half, having been subbed off during the break, he went and sat next to his mum and his entourage in the stands, three rows above ... Al Khelaifi. They didn\'t talk that evening, sources told ESPNFC, but they didn\'t really need to. The damage has been done already. WorkWorkEckroat gets first career PGA Tour win, $1.62M Horschel -- who vaulted into the mix with six consecutive birdies Sunday afternoon -- finished at 12 under. He ended up tied for ninth, along with Keith Mitchell, Peter Malnati, Alex Noren, Andrew Novak, Kevin Yu and Martin Laird. WorkWorkYouthful USWNT bounces back to impose itself on Colombia \"Canada is another country that\'s close to us, we\'ve played many times,\" Kilgore said. \"We\'re looking forward to that and I think the keys will be a little bit of a mix of what we saw tonight in terms of being on the front foot, making sure that we are making it uncomfortable [for them].\" WorkWorkMMA confidential: UFC fighters ready to make the leap into boxing Just last week, UFC bantamweight champion Sean O\'Malley and Ryan Garcia got into a back-and-forth on social media about wanting to fight each other in boxing. Partly thanks to Ngannou, there doesn\'t seem to be an end in sight to the fad of MMA fighters crossing over into boxing. Even if it does not make sense for everyone who fights in the Octagon. WorkNCAA gymnastics Week 9: Cal bests Utah, and Florida clinches the regular-season SEC title Katie Harper, North Carolina State: The Wolfpack had a banner day on bars on Saturday during its quad meet victory (197.00) over Iowa State, Northern Illinois and Temple. Harper, a freshman, earned a career-high score of 9.95 -- tying with teammate Emily Shepard for the event title -- and helped carry the team to its fourth best bars score in program history (49.400). WorkCollege baseball top 25 rankings, plus players to watch Caglianone is just plain out of this world. Dominant on both sides of the ball, Caglianone has improved his game even more from last season. This past weekend, he recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts against Miami, and of course, hit a home run in the same game, too. He has four total home runs this season and 22 hits to go along with 13 RBIs. Florida is ranked No. 4, and as Caglianone continues to dominate, the school should be competitive throughout the regular season and beyond. WorkEx-WR Edwards stops 'vicious' assault of man, 80 \"The noise escalates, and then you can hear some pushing and shoving, so you know what fighting sounds like,\" Edwards told WDIV-TV. \"But once I hear a thud, that\'s when I got up and turned around.\" WorkFantasy baseball: How Acuna's knee changes the top of the draft Atlanta RHP Reynaldo Lopez started Saturday\'s game against a formidable Toronto lineup of regulars and tossed three shutout innings. Lopez has been a full-time relief pitcher in recent seasons, but he sure looks to be in the lead for the No. 5 rotation spot over Bryce Elder and others, and since this is the Braves and they score so many runs, we have to start taking this seriously in fantasy. Lopez is becoming worthy of a spot in ESPN standard leagues. WorkAlabama Democrats Swarm to a Rare Chance to Increase Their Power The race is also a test of what fair representation means in a state that has repeatedly provoked federal intervention by disregarding civil and voting rights laws. On top of persuading people to come out and vote, Mr. Gray said, “it’s a lot of education when it comes to what actually happened.” WorkLawyers Offer New Witness in Effort to Disqualify Trump Prosecutors in Georgia Defense lawyers thought that Mr. Bradley, a former law partner of Mr. Wade who also served for a time as Mr. Wade’s divorce lawyer, might offer some clarity as to when the romance began. But that did not happen. In a text exchange in January, he told one of the defense lawyers in the case that he “absolutely” thought the romance began before Ms. Willis hired Mr. Wade. WorkKey Primary Races in California and North Carolina to Follow on Super Tuesday A key part of his strategy has been to pour $10 million into an effort to elevate one Republican opponent, Steve Garvey, a 75-year-old former baseball star. Garvey has held few campaign events and not bought a single campaign ad. And yet, with help from Schiff, he now appears poised to advance to the general election. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkHighlights of the Supreme Court’s Opinions on Trump’s Ballot Eligibility They wanted to ensure that those who had participated in that insurrection, and in possible future insurrections, could not return to prominent roles. Today, the majority goes beyond the necessities of this case to limit how Section 3 can bar an oathbreaking insurrectionist from becoming President. Although we agree that Colorado cannot enforce Section 3, we protest the majority’s effort to use this case to define the limits of federal enforcement of that provision. WorkNewly Released Messages Detail Roots of the ‘Fake Electors’ Scheme Taken together, the documents show in new detail how the Trump campaign’s litigation strategy was not designed to win in court as much as it was designed to give cover for their political efforts. And they underscore the central role that Mr. Troupis — previously a little-known figure in the effort to overturn the election — played in furthering the plans. WorkSupreme Court Ballot Opinion Ends Uncertainty, but Not Anger On Monday, all nine Supreme Court justices agreed that individual states could not bar candidates for the presidency under the insurrection provision. Four justices would have left it at that. A five-justice majority, in an unsigned opinion, went on to say that Congress must act to give that section force. WorkHaley Is Still Struggling to Deal With Trump’s Grip on Their Party It’s also one that she struggled with even before she joined his administration. According to one of her memoirs, Ms. Haley canceled an appearance on NBC’s “Today Show” the morning after the 2016 presidential election because she was unprepared to discuss the topic of the day: what Mr. Trump’s unexpected victory could mean for the future of the Republican Party. |
