Indivisibles,

The Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruled unanimously that states do not have the standing to remove a presidential candidate from the ballot, ending a long-shot bid by a group of Republican voters in Colorado to block his eligibility on the grounds of the 14th amendment.

Though there was some disagreement between the liberal and conservative blocs of justices, they came together and delivered one important message: The courts will not save you.

…or at least, that’s what we heard.

Americans across the country (including us) have been waiting with bated breath for the results of the judicial challenges to Trump’s eligibility along with his numerous indictments. It is only natural that we want to see a serial fraud, harasser, and insurrectionist brought to justice. But we can’t take anything for granted -- the stakes are too high, so we all need to get to work.

Trump is an existential danger to our democracy, and we cannot wait for someone else to stop him.

We know that Trump will cheat and connive his way to whatever ends he deems best, and we know his enablers, whether in Congress or on the Supreme Court, are happy to let it happen (or egg it on!). Ezra’s Newsletter from this weekend did an incredible job at laying out the work Mitch McConnell did, in collaboration with Trump, to steal power from the American people and stack the chips in MAGA’s favor. As we try to undo the damage of Trump’s presidency, we are still working to restore democracy, not just defend it.

We have to protect the right to vote for all Americans.
We have to restore legitimacy to the courts.
And, we must federally enshrine reproductive freedom.

We can’t stop, because we know Trump and his MAGA lackeys are continuing to attack our rights.

When a court in Alabama can make a unilateral ruling nearly halting all access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) in the state and MAGA Republicans in Congress still refuse to pass federal legislation protecting it, we know that they are not content to stop at the rights they’ve already stripped away.

They are coming for more. And we are the last defense.

With that, here are your weekly to-dos:

 Your 5 weekly to-dos

  1. Call your senator and demand they protect IVF access nationwide. The MAGA agenda did not just stop at repealing Roe. They intend to ban contraception, IVF, gender-affirming care, marriage equality, and more. Sen. Tammy Duckworth has introduced the Access to Family Building Act, a bill that would enshrine access to IVF and related services as a federal right, protecting both would-be families and their medical providers. If your senator is a Democrat, call and make sure they are a cosponsor. If your senator is a Republican, tell them to put their money where their mouth is, pass this bill, and actually support families.
  2. Sign up to volunteer with our new electoral program -- Project 2024: Majority Over MAGA. Through this new electoral program, we will be rolling out tools to ensure Indivisibles all across the country have the opportunity to make a difference in the highest-priority races in the country. This will include tactics like phonebanking, postcarding, and direct-to-voter texting along with our groundbreaking community canvassing strategy: Neighbor2Neighbor. Sign up to be the first to know when we launch our tools in your area.
  3. If your representative is a Democrat, demand they oppose all extreme MAGA policy riders. Congress pushed government funding back once again, and half of the package faces a new deadline this Friday, March 8. House Republicans will not be able to pass anything without significant Democratic support. As the most-extreme wing of the Republican party tries to hold everyone hostage and attach dangerous riders to funding the government, we must ensure Democrats stay in line and push them to sign a clean funding bill.
  4. If you have a Democratic senator (or two!), demand they oppose all extreme MAGA policy riders. What sort of things are those MAGA extremists trying to include in a government funding bill? Attacks on reproductive freedom, the LGBTQ+ community, and vulnerable asylum seekers; rollbacks of gun violence prevention policies; and more. We cannot allow our Democratic senators to give in to these extreme demands.
  5. Tune in to the State of the Union this Thursday, March 7 at 9pm ET/6pm PT and follow along with our commentary on Threads. Join us in celebrating President Biden’s accomplishments and hearing about his vision for the future on important issues like reproductive freedom and democracy. Follow along on Threads as we contrast Biden’s leadership with MAGA Republicans’ extreme agenda.

P.S. We rely on grassroots supporters to help fund the tools Indivisibles use on a daily basis -- including the call pages and LTE tools on your to do list! If you're able, pitch in today to help fund our work and keep this movement going.

Call for a Humanitarian Ceasefire

**Content Warning: Talk about the current humanitarian crisis in Israel and Palestine. Jump to the line break if you need to avoid this topic.**

Vice President Kamala Harris called for an “immediate ceasefire” this Sunday while speaking at an event commemorating Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama. This follows the US air-dropping aid into Gaza this weekend in an acknowledgement that the Palestinian people need any type of help they can get, even if it amounts to a drop in the bucket.

It is a subtle shift in tone from the administration, signaling that efforts to pressure officials to do everything in their power to broker a ceasefire are working, if slowly. It’s important to remember that these shifts are driven by the people speaking out about atrocities.

We cannot sit idly by and watch when we know more than 12,000 children have been killed since October 7th. There must be an immediate ceasefire, the return of all hostages, and open access to humanitarian aid.

It is important that the Vice President is now calling for a ceasefire (even if only a temporary one). It is important that we see progress in the administration’s movement toward stopping this brutal violence. As we inch toward Israel’s arbitrary deadline preceding an offensive in Rafah, all progress is both good and potentially life-saving. But that progress must be followed up with action.

Contact your Member of Congress and ensure that they hear from the people. The fighting must stop, the hostages must be returned, and crucial, life-saving aid must be allowed into Gaza.

We’ll learn from veteran activist Loretta Ross about how we can assess and adjust our communication approaches based on the person we’re talking to and how closely they already align with our goals.
