My Week in Congress - Week of February 26

Last week, I was back in Washington D.C. to keep the government open and avoid a costly government shutdown. The most basic job of Congress is to fund the federal government.

I am pleased to hear that progress is being made on FY24 appropriations - including a funding deal on six different appropriations bills. In order to ensure the government does not shut down, Congress must work in a bipartisan manner to pass clean funding bills without poison pill policy riders. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues to reach a bipartisan agreement on the full FY24 government spending bills.

Additionally, I was glad President Biden visited Brownsville on Thursday to hear directly from border communities and Border Patrol. As the President said, Congress must pass the Bipartisan Senate Border Bill and finally secure the border. I am ready to work with my colleagues - Republicans and Democrats - to get the job done.

Water Infrastructure Funding Webinar

Attracting more federal funds to our district and region has been a top priority during my tenure in Congress.

Last week, I was pleased to host an informational webinar on federal water grant funding opportunities for TX-28 stakeholders. Water is life, and quality water infrastructure in South Texas means our communities can continue to grow.

National Treasury Employees Union

It was a pleasure to meet with the National Treasury Employees Union, represented by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents from Laredo.

Our CBP agents work tirelessly to protect our nation’s ports of entry, and I will continue to fight for them in Congress.

Ambassador of Honduras

I had the opportunity to meet with Honduran Ambassador Javier Bu Soto. We discussed strategies to address irregular migration at the southern border.

I have long said that in order to fully address the crisis at our border, we must start playing defense at the 20-yard line, not just the 1-yard line. That means working with our global partners to address the root causes of mass migration.

Congressional Art Competition - Now Open!

My office is now accepting submissions for the annual Congressional Art Competition!

High school students from across TX-28 are invited to compete for a chance to showcase their art in the U.S. Capitol, where Members of Congress and visitors from around the world will view it.

I’m glad the President was at the border yesterday to hear directly from Border Patrol and border communities dealing with a crisis.

As President Biden said, Congress needs to pass the Bipartisan Senate Border Bill and finally secure the border.

The Bipartisan Senate Border Bill is a good deal that would provide crucial relief to border communities as we face a crisis.

Unfortunately, the bill that would secure the border is stuck in Congress with no plans for a vote.

We need solutions at the border – not politics.
