Message from Congressman Scott Fitzgerald

Good afternoon!

I hope everyone’s week is off to a great start. I’m headed back to Washington, DC for another week of legislative work.

In this week’s newsletter edition you’ll get to read more about the Hunter Biden deposition that happened last week. In our commitment to transparency, House Republicans already released the deposition transcript but if you’re looking for the long story short: the deposition was like a bad episode of the show COPS. Hunter acted confused, like he didn't know, or couldn't remember anything. But of course, just as in the show, everyone watching can see the obvious wrongdoings of the Biden family.

Keep reading on to hear about a border trip President Biden took in an effort to save face on the heels of former President Trump visiting. And as always, call my office if you have any questions or suggestions to make.

Have a great week!

- Scott

Hunter Biden Deposition

Last Wednesday, Hunter Biden testified behind closed doors for a deposition after months of defying a congressional subpoena to testify to the Judiciary and Oversight Committees.

Staying true to our promise of transparency, Republicans released the deposition transcript shortly after. You can read the deposition for yourself here.

The takeaways? Hunter claimed that he didn’t know who the “big guy” was…even though we have the bank receipts that clearly implicate President Biden.

Hunter also claimed that he didn’t call his dad to influence favorably policy in Ukraine for Burisma—which Hunter sat on the board of. Of course, it doesn’t take a genius to connect the dots. Even President Biden himself admits to calling an audible on the plane to withhold a billion-dollar loan unless Ukrainian President Poroshenko fired Prosecutor General Shokin, who happened to be investigating Burisma.

All in all, the deposition was like a bad episode of the show COPS. Hunter acted confused, like he didn't know, or couldn't remember anything. But of course, just as in the show, everyone watching can see the obvious wrongdoings of the Biden family.

Biden & Trump Visit the Southern Border

President Joe Biden very conveniently scheduled only his second visit to the southern border last week…the same exact day former President Trump had a trip planned to the border.

President Biden’s leadership at the border is abysmal, and it’s clear he didn’t want to be upstaged by Trump but it’s too late for that. Even Brownsville residents blasted Joe Biden's visit to the Southern Border, according to Fox Business who reported a high level of dissatisfaction within the community. Fox Business Lydia S. Hu reported residents saying, "it's a day late and a dollar short" and "too little, too late."

As a reminder, according CBP, January was the 35th straight month, where monthly illegal immigrant encounters (176,205) have been higher than even the highest month seen under President Trump.

My Cybercrime Bill Passed out of Financial Services Committee

Last week, I was pleased to have my legislation pass out of a Financial Services Committee Markup—H.R. 7156, the Combating Money Laundering in Cyber Crime Act.

The Combatting Money Laundering in Cyber Crime Act would harmonize criminal and banking statutes and clarify the U.S. Secret Service’s (USSS) investigative authority over crimes related to illicit digital asset transactions. This would ensure the agency can address emerging forms of criminal activity involving digital assets.

In other words, the bill will keep our USSS agile on illicit digital transactions by filling the gap between criminal and anti-money laundering laws. As financial transactions rely more and more on technology, Wisconsinites need to know that law enforcement has the tools to protect them. This bill will protect our communities from transnational cyber-criminal activity, and I’m proud to lead the charge on these safeguards.

Naval Academy Summer Seminar and Summer STEM Applications

The Naval Academy Summer Seminar and Summer STEM Applications are open and will remain open until April 15.

Naval Academy Summer Seminar offers an opportunity for rising high school seniors to experience USNA for one week. Participants learn about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics, and professional training play equally important roles in developing our nation's future leaders.

The Summer STEM Program is a great catalyst to initiate the pursuit of a future in science and engineering. Summer STEM is an opportunity for participants to create, build, and explore in world-class lab facilities, working alongside USNA’s distinguished faculty and Midshipmen.
