John, today I officially qualified for re-election to Congress!
This is the next step on my journey that I set out upon six years ago, when I first ran for office in 2018. I had been working as an activist in the gun safety movement ever since the deadly shooting of my son Jordan back in 2012. However, after the deadly Parkland massacre in which 17 lives were taken, I knew I had to do more in the fight to end gun violence.
I decided if I were going to make a difference, I had to step up and run for office. Many people told me it was foolish to run on a platform of stopping gun violence in a district that previously voted Republican. However, I knew my message would resonate with Georgians who were sick of seeing senseless violence in our streets and schools.
I flipped my district from red-to-blue in 2018, and subsequently won re-election two more times. As I serve my third term in Congress, I come to work every day with the same mission I started with: fighting so no more families would have to go through the pain we did.
Today marks another milestone as I work towards serving a fourth term representing Georgians in the Capitol Building. This job has been the honor of a lifetime. While Republicans attempt to gerrymander me out of my seat, I won’t let them decide when my time in Congress is over.
This campaign is just beginning. I’ve got a long way to go, but I can’t wait to get started.
Onward,
Lucy McBath
