We're endorsing Shomari Figures for Congress! (Alabama's 2nd Congressional District)

Shomari is a native of Alabama. He worked in the White House during President Obama's administration. Following his time in the White House, he was a senior advisor to Attorney General Loretta Lynch at the Department of Justice. Shomari had the opportunity to work on President Obama's clemency initiative, which freed hundreds of mostly Black and brown people from unjust prison sentences they had been given under unfair sentencing laws. He then served as a counsel in Congress, providing leadership on critical issues such as civil rights, immigration, homeland security, child welfare, and policing.
Shomari is who we need for Alabama's 2nd District. He has firsthand experience growing up and raising his own children in the area that made Shomari who he is and thus has a deep understanding of the district's needs. His parents have also left a legacy of public service in the district as they both served in the Alabama State Senate for decades. His father also led a lawsuit that bankrupted the KKK following the lynching of a Black teenager in Mobile, Alabama, in 1981.
Alabama's national rankings include 47th in environmental safety, 44th in health care, and 44th in education. Not only will Shomari address these issues strategically and thoughtfully, but he'd also ensure that he's accounting for the white supremacy woven into these systems, as well as confronting the legacies of slavery exclusion that have thrived in Alabama, disproportionately impacting Black people there for far too long.
The district Shomari is running in is brand new, and it has the potential to give a greater voice to Black voters in Alabama. John, we cannot take this new majority Black district for granted.
