Last year, media organizations around the country cut more than 20,000 jobs due to downsizing and consolidations meant to protect news organizations’ bottom line. And now, in 2024, layoffs and mergers are happening at twice the rate. Outlets impacted include legacy media powerhouses CBS News, the Los Angeles Times, and the Baltimore Sun.
These layoffs have created even more news deserts nationwide, leaving many needing more factual, local news they can trust. Important stories go unreported, serious issues don’t get proper coverage, and right-wing online lies and conspiracies spread unchecked.

That’s not all, thanks to the generosity and support of incredible grassroots donors like you, we’re even opening an eleventh newsroom in Texas later this year.
