Next month, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case that could majorly impact emergency abortion care in states throughout the country. Here's what you need to know:
The case is centered around the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), a federal law that makes sure people can access the emergency medical care they need. Since its inception nearly 40 years ago, EMTALA has always covered emergency abortion care. Now, anti-abortion extremists are attempting to argue that EMTALA should not apply to emergency abortion care in states that have abortion bans in place—no matter the consequences to someone's health or life.
Anti-abortion extremists are trying to push the Supreme Court to stop doctors from providing emergency medical care to pregnant people. This is just the latest attack from anti-abortion extremists on our reproductive freedom— one that could have devastating and dire impacts on pregnant people who need emergency care.
