CAMPAIGNS UPDATE
August 2019

Dear John

This September, we’re on a mission to clean up our countryside – and we want you
to join us.

CPRE’s Green Clean is a nationwide litter pick to clean up our countryside. We’re holding over 25 Green Clean litter picks across the country, and we’re
encouraging people of all ages to help clean up our green spaces - will you join your local event?

Yes I'll join in
[[link removed]]We’ll count all the bottles and cans collected and use the evidence to keep the
pressure on the Government to create the best possible deposit return system for
England.

Last year, CPRE’s Green Cleaners collected hundreds of bags of litter and over
11,000 bottles and cans - improving their local countryside for everyone’s
benefit. We want to go bigger and better this year.

DEPOSIT RETURN: WILL THE GOVERNMENT BOTTLE IT?
In one of his final speeches as environment secretary, Michael Gove threw his personal backing behind an ‘all in’ deposit return system
[[link removed]] .

20,000 of you took action for this straightforward solution to litter in the
countryside – and he listened. This was a big milestone in our campaign – and you helped make it happen.

But unfortunately, it’s not over the line yet. We don’t yet have a formal
commitment from government to introduce a world-leading system, and with a new
prime minister and cabinet, nothing is certain yet.

We’re determined to keep the pressure on the government. Just last week, we released a survey that shows 7 out of 10 people back a UK-wide, ‘all in’ system
[[link removed]] , and we called on the new environment secretary, Theresa Villiers, to commit
to introducing this popular policy, and finally put a stop to the harm that
drinks containers cause our countryside, environment and wildlife.

We’ll keep you updated.

BORIS JOHNSON AND COUNTRYSIDE ISSUES
It’s been a tumultuous few weeks in politics. We have two new party leaders, a
new prime minister, and many more new ministers.

The decisions that our politicians take will shape the future of our
countryside. So if we’re going to be part of the story, and the voice for a
beautiful and thriving countryside for everyone’s benefit, we’re going to have
to get stuck right in.

And that’s exactly what we’re doing.

From rebalancing the planning system to ensure affordable homes are built for
people that need them, to ditching fast-tracked fracking and taking bold action
on the climate emergency, we’re urging the new prime minister to put countryside
issues first.

We want to help the countryside thrive, for everyone’s benefit. To increase our
impact we have a new strategy, a new look and exciting projects coming soon.
We’re also going to be referring to the organisation as ‘ CPRE, the countryside charity ’, so it’s immediately clear what we do, and that we’re a charity.

As you can see we’re already using our new look in our emails to you, and you’ll
see more of it in the coming months.

You can find out more about the changes on our website.
