Friend,
This week, the House and Senate passed the 3rd COVID-19 response bill, which, despite corporate bailouts, includes important steps toward protecting our communities during the pandemic. But these first three bills have not gone nearly far enough.
I’m outraged that many of my Republican colleagues held up this legislation because they thought the economic supports for low-income families were too generous. Thankfully, we were still able to double direct payments to working people from $600 to $1,200. But one-time payments aren’t enough.
Together, we must keep fighting for our neighbors and our communities. Can you pitch in today to help us fight for critical protections for our working families, small businesses, and workers on the frontlines of the pandemic?
In order to sustain our families through this economic downturn, we’ll need recurring monthly payments like I’ve proposed in the Automatic BOOST to Communities Act, which is getting more and more attention from economists across the country.
Another major shortcoming of the recent bills is that they don’t address water shutoffs. Not only is water a human right, but just like masks, washing your hands prevents the spread of COVID-19. Right now I have 80members of Congress supporting my push demanding direct water shutoff relief for people.
We need more support for our local governments and municipalities, which touch all of our lives. That’s why we’ve introduced the Emergency Relief for State, Territorial, and Local Governments Act, which would ensure that instead of just bailing out banks and corporations, the Federal Reserve also purchases municipal debt.
We can’t stand on the sidelines as Senate Leader Mitch McConnell puts forward proposals that primarily help those at the top while ignoring people most impacted by the pandemic. We need bold, creative leadership right now for policies that include everyone.
Pitch in today so we can keep fighting for protections for our communities and our families!
We will get through this together. With your help, I can keep fighting for the progressive services we all need right now to be safe and healthy.
Thank you for being by my side.
Always serving you,
Rashida
