Honoring the Life of Laken Hope Riley
|
I joined members of the Georgia Congressional Delegation in a moment of silence on the House floor to pay our respects to Laken Riley. At the hands of a violent illegal alien, we have lost yet another American life—a beloved daughter, student, and Georgian. We have learned more over the past several days about just how precious Laken was to her loved ones, and now she is gone.
President Biden's complete disregard for the law and blatant refusal to secure the border undoubtedly led to this unfathomable tragedy. The administration must recognize its failures and immediately reverse course. I recently sent a letter with my Republican colleagues from Georgia to President Biden demanding that he use his presidential authority to secure our border and ensure an incident such as this cannot occur in the United States again. The Georgia Republican House of Representatives delegation also sent a letter to the leaders of Athens-Clarke County demanding that they overturn the sanctuary policies that have attracted illegal aliens to that community.
Robin and I join our fellow Georgians and the nation in praying for Laken’s family and loved ones. She will not be forgotten.

2024 Youth Leadership Summit
|
I hosted my 2024 Youth Leadership Summit on Monday and I'd like to thank all of the students, educators, and speakers from Georgia's 12th District who participated.
It is my privilege to host this event every two years to bring together some of our district's brightest young students to hear from speakers who have demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities in their communities.
Together, we can equip and inspire the next generation of leaders by helping them hone their leadership skills as they prepare for the future.

"National March into Literacy Month"
|
I recently introduced H. Res. 1022, a resolution expressing support for the designation of the month of March 2024 as "National March into Literacy Month."
Childhood literacy is critical to ensure our youth can achieve the American Dream. We know that children who are reading capably by the third grade are more likely to lead successful lives, underscoring the necessity of intervening early and instilling a love for reading.
As a grandfather to fourteen grandchildren and a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, I am wholeheartedly committed to promoting and advancing childhood literacy initiatives. By doing so, we are not only empowering our youth, but also laying the foundation for their future success.

Strengthening America's Nuclear Energy Capabilities
|
The House passed H.R. 6544, the bipartisan Atomic Energy Advancement Act, with my support, which aims to incentivize and advance nuclear energy production in the United States.
Included in this legislation is a bill I sponsored – the Nuclear Licensing Efficiency Act – which would improve the licensing review process for future nuclear projects by establishing updated procedures and timelines for reviewing nuclear licensing applications.
With the first two new nuclear reactors built in over three decades in the United States located at Plant Vogtle, Georgia-12 is leading our nation’s nuclear future. By modernizing the inefficient procedures that hamper our nuclear energy expansion, we can fully embrace the reliability of clean, 24/7 nuclear energy.

New Op-Ed: Biden's LNG Export Ban Threatens U.S. Energy Security
|
I recently penned an opinion piece for the Washington Examiner with my colleague Rep. August Pfluger (TX-11) calling out President Biden's destructive liquefied natural gas, or LNG, export ban.
Under the guise of climate change, this politically-driven decision will only eliminate American jobs, increase costs for American consumers, and further jeopardize U.S. energy security, all to prop up the president’s rush-to-green agenda.

The House Education and the Workforce Committee held a roundtable this week to hear from nine Jewish students who have been impacted by the surge in antisemitism on their college campuses.
I am thankful for the courage of these students to speak out and share their stories, and as a member of the committee, we will continue to take steps to hold postsecondary institutions accountable for their responses to rampant antisemitism on their campuses.

I recently had the privilege of speaking at the Washington Rotary Club meeting where I provided an update on the Biden border crisis and the upcoming Farm Bill reauthorization. It's always nice seeing old friends and discussing the issues that matter most to them.

4E Youth Roundtable Discussion
|
Also while in Washington, Georgia, I provided an update on bipartisan legislation the Education and the Workforce Committee recently advanced that makes needed improvements to the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, or WIOA. I was proud that provisions from my Startup Act were included in this critical legislation to incorporate entrepreneurial skills development training into the current workforce development system.

Junior Achievement Discovery Center Visit
|
On Tuesday, I visited the new Junior Achievement Discovery Center in Evans with Richmond County School System Superintendent Bradshaw and Columbia County School District Superintendent Flynt.
I have often said that we must bridge the gap between the education and business communities to prepare our students to fill good-paying, in-demand jobs.
Junior Achievement of Georgia is doing just that through hands-on learning that successfully develops the skills students need to compete in the modern economy.

Columbia County Rotary Club Meeting
|
I also attended the Columbia County West Rotary Club meeting in Grovetown where I gave an update on my current work on behalf of the 12th District and answered some questions from those in attendance.
