John, I’m writing to share two very exciting wins for our democracy.
First, it’s finally official: Wisconsin’s rigged voting maps – notorious as among the worst in the country – are finally gone for good!
I don’t need to tell you how big a deal this is – for years, Wisconsin (a truly purple state with a nearly even party split among voters) has been dominated by a right-wing supermajority in the legislature, locked in by maps that politicians were allowed to draw for themselves.
But thanks to Common Cause Wisconsin’s tireless work – from exposing how these unfair maps were drawn [1], to working on the county and state level to pressure legislators and demand change – Wisconsin’s notorious state gerrymander has been thrown out with yesterday’s trash.
It doesn’t stop there. I’m sure you’ve heard from me about how the far-right’s Article V plot would put all of our rights at risk. That’s why I’m so glad to share that in 2024 alone, we’ve already dealt our opponents two major defeats in Wyoming and Maine!
If you’re not familiar with the Article V Convention, it’s a plot that would allow unelected, unaccountable delegates to rewrite our Constitution with no limits on what they can do. With just a handful of states standing between you, me, and an attempt to gut our Constitution and all the rights it protects, every single win in this fight matters.
And two in one month is a remarkable feat! It was only possible because Common Cause members like you did your part – whether you lived in one of those states and alerted lawmakers to this threat, or helped fuel this fight from afar with your contributions.
As you know, the fights to strengthen our democracy often take years or even decades to accomplish. The unfortunate reality is that the time it takes to see our actions bring change can be discouraging.
That’s why I’m so proud to show you how your action matters – as we just saw in Wisconsin, Maine, and Wyoming in just the past month. I hope my update today can give you a renewed sense of commitment and hope for a better democracy for us all.
Here’s to many more wins, together.
