Need to Focus Better? A Harvard Professor With ADHD Explains How He Does It - Inc.com (No paywall) He got there, he says, by examining his own ability to focus and think, trying different techniques to see what would help, a process he shares in his new book, LIT, which stands for "life ignition tools." He tells Inc.: "It really was me figuring out that there are all these incredible energies and tools I could tap into to overcome the challenges that I was facing."
Karp says we should all recognize what we're up against. For one thing, the human brain evolved to be distractable. "Our brains are wired to wander, to scan the horizon for potential threats," he says. And then there's the effect of living in our modern, digital world, which is a mass of distractions. Marketing, social media, media, and other elements of modern life are actually designed to play on our distractibility, he says. "This biologically-based mechanism for survival is now being hijacked," he says. "It's not our fault."

WorkTurkish media reveal identities of alleged spies for China An alleged spy for China living in Istanbul evaded detection by Turkish authorities for years, Sadiq Memeteziz's undercover work taking him to Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Syria and Xinjiang in China's far-west, Turkish media reports said, citing official documents. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWhy Americans Care About Work So Much - The Atlantic (No paywall) Until quite recently, we had little concept of “progress” in our labor. Around the world, people hunted or harvested, just as their parents and grandparents had. They hammered nails. They assembled gears and sewed thread and patched homes. Their work was a matter of subsistence and necessity; it was not a race for status or an existential search for meaning. These were jobs. And for hundreds of millions of people everywhere, work is still work—grueling or boring or exploited or poorly paid, or all of the above. WorkWork‘Pretty Sickening’: Texas Ranchers Face Crippling Losses Mr. Homen, 41, finds himself among scores of cattle ranchers across the Great Plains looking at an uncertain future. Thousands of animals have been killed, and outbuildings and homes have been destroyed in fires across Texas, Nebraska and Kansas. The Smokehouse Creek fire, near Mr. Homen’s ranch outside the town of Pampa, has expanded to more than one million acres and threatens to grow further this weekend with windy, dry conditions expected. WorkThousands Are Without Power in California and Nevada Amid Heavy Snowfall In the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, the huge mountain range that runs along the spine of California, forecasters rated the avalanche danger as high, and they expected avalanche hazards to worsen throughout the day because of the new snow and continued winds. Overnight on Friday, winds reached as high as 171 miles per hour. WorkU.S. Begins Airdrops of Humanitarian Aid in Gaza The drops came a day after President Biden said the United States would find new ways to get aid to Palestinians in desperate need because of Israel’s five-month military campaign to destroy Hamas. It also comes two days after more than 100 Palestinians were killed as Israeli forces opened fire around a convoy of aid trucks in northern Gaza. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkNHL Power Rankings: Most captivating game for each team in March Games of the month: March 19-23, at the Kings, Ducks and Sharks. The road trip through the Western Canadian NHL cities is typically a challenging one from a logistical (and sometimes on-ice) perspective. While the weather one experiences during the California swing is generally more pleasant, it can be another challenge, particularly for a young player like Connor Bedard getting used to the rigors of pro hockey. And, well, the games against the Ducks and Sharks will certainly have an impact on the draft lottery standings. WorkWorkNBA betting: Eight teams to bet on to make - or miss - the playoffs So, while I wouldn\'t necessarily find value yet in betting that the 76ers or Knicks would not make the playoffs, or that either the Bulls (+340 to make the playoffs) or Hawks (+700) would, I do suggest monitoring the situation carefully. Because in the near future, this race could get more interesting. WorkTransfer Talk: Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea circling Musiala - Eintracht Frankfurt striker Rafael Santos Borre is set to join Internacional, reveals Cesar Luis Merlo. The 28-year-old, who is on loan at Werder Bremen, has reportedly terminated his deal there and he is now set to travel to Brazil to sign with the Brazilian Serie A club. He has agreed to sign a deal until December 2028. WorkUniversity of Florida Eliminates All D.E.I.-Related Positions Universities across the country have vastly expanded diversity programs in recent decades amid concerns over underrepresentation on campus. Supporters of D.E.I. have said that the initiatives are a good way to foster inclusion and that they help students from all backgrounds succeed on campus. WorkUniversity of Idaho Needs More Students. Should It Buy an Online School? Mr. Green, who inherited a deficit when he became president in 2019, set out to run the university as a business. He cut spending, laid off employees and merged programs. He has also worked to entice students to the campus in Moscow, a city in a remote area of the state called the Palouse, which is distinctive for its vast rolling hills covered in wheat. He even published a book on navigating the university through crisis. WorkTrump Makes Baseless Claims About Immigration and Voter Fraud Nor is there evidence to suggest that Democrats have been encouraging the surge of migrants at the border in order to register them illegally to vote, one of many claims that Mr. Trump has made as he has promoted widespread and frequently debunked assertions of voter fraud in the 2020 election. WorkWorkTrump Dominates Michigan G.O.P. Convention Amid Party Turmoil But a protracted fight over the state party’s rightful leader spilled over into the proceedings, where an estimated 200 Republican stalwarts from about 20 of Michigan’s 83 counties were denied credentials. Two other groups boycotted the event and held breakaway conventions, one more than 100 miles to the north in Houghton Lake, Mich., and another more than 50 miles southeast in Battle Creek, Mich. WorkFor Democrats Pining for an Alternative, Biden Team Has a Message: Get Over It Members of Mr. Biden’s team insist they feel little sense of concern. The president’s closest aides push back in exasperation against those questioning his decision to run again and dismiss polls as meaningless this far before the vote. They argue that doubters constantly underestimate Mr. Biden and that Democrats have won or outperformed expectations in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023 and even a special House election this year. WorkTrump’s Support Among Latinos Grows, New Poll Shows Historically, roughly a third of Latino voters have supported Republicans in presidential elections. But there have been examples of greater Republican success — in 2004, George W. Bush received support from about 40 percent of Latinos. WorkWorkVoters Doubt Biden’s Leadership and Favor Trump, Times/Siena Poll Finds Mr. Trump’s ability to consolidate the Republican base better than Mr. Biden has unified the base of his own party shows up starkly in the current thinking of 2020 voters. Mr. Trump is winning 97 percent of those who say they voted for him four years ago, and virtually none of his past supporters said they are casting a ballot for Mr. Biden. In contrast, Mr. Biden is winning only 83 percent of his 2020 voters, with 10 percent saying they now back Mr. Trump. WorkScenes From the Smokehouse Creek Fire in Texas The fire, which spread around the town of Canadian, is still largely uncontrolled. It has devastated cattle ranches, destroyed homes and killed at least two people. It is now one of the most destructive fires in U.S. history, and conditions are expected to worsen over the weekend. WorkRacial Turnout Gap Has Widened With a Weakened Voting Rights Act, Study Finds The “racial turnout gap” refers to the difference in the percentage of eligible white and nonwhite voters who cast a ballot in a given election. This gap is watched closely by voting rights groups and civil rights leaders as an indication of potentially harmful laws or procedures that could have suppressive effects on communities of color. Work‘I’m Matt.’ For Some Politicians, Addiction Battles Drive Policymaking. Mr. Dorsey called the recovery movement “a sleeping giant” politically and said it has mobilized in San Francisco because of the drug crisis that has killed nearly 3,000 people in the city since 2020 — far more than Covid-19, homicides and car crashes combined. Others say that society has become more tolerant of people with personal struggles, which has made it easier to open up about drug addiction and mental health challenges. WorkHow Iris Apfel became an icon in her 90s This level of achievement came as no surprise to designer Dries Van Noten, who reflected with affection in her biography on what Iris Apfel meant to him: \"I have rarely met someone as vivid, alive, vital, vivacious, irreverent, joyous and needed as Iris.\" He added: \"She breathes young air, thinks young thoughts and gathers no dust.\" WorkIt’s Me, Hi, I’m the Problem. I’m 33. As the biggest part of the biggest generation, this hyper-specific age group — call us what you will, but I like “peak millennials” — has moved through the economy like a person squeezing into a too-small sweater. At every life stage, it has stretched a system that was often too small to accommodate it, leaving it somewhat flabby and misshapen in its wake. My cohort has an outsized amount of economic power, but that has sometimes made life harder for us. WorkThe Big Questions Raised by Elon Musk’s Lawsuit Against OpenAI Musk also alleges that OpenAI has breached its fiduciary duty, but that charge has its own challenges, lawyers said, given that such claims are traditionally handled in Delaware, not California, where the lawsuit was filed. (Musk, of course, has an infamously rocky relationship with the state of Delaware.) WorkWorkAs Trump’s Criminal Trial Approaches, He May Be His Own Worst Enemy “I would expect Trump to try to act up,” said Ty Cobb, a veteran lawyer who worked in the White House Counsel’s Office during the Trump administration and who has since been critical of the former president. He added: “He needs to be aggressively muzzled by the lawyers if he is to avoid offending the jury.” WorkWhy Mainers Are Falling Hard for Heat Pumps Maine’s rapid adoption is being spurred by a combination of state rebates on top of federal incentives and a new cadre of vendors and installers, as well as mounting frustrations over the high cost of heating oil. WorkIn a Land of Lavish Weddings, This Prenuptial Party Takes the Cake The guest list is part of the pageantry. Guests are not just (or not even) friends, but attractions in their own right. Apart from enjoying the spectacle, many will appreciate the chance to sidle up to India’s most influential business family at the bar. For instance, Nita Ambani, Mukesh Ambani’s wife, is reportedly poised to become board chairwoman of the company created by a recent merger of Reliance with Walt Disney’s Indian media assets. WorkWorkWorkWorkCollege AI degree programs are booming. Are they worth the cost? Given the uncertainty, some professionals said students can\'t go wrong with a traditional computer science degree or an AI-specific one, provided the fundamentals are covered. Those who take the former route, however, should consider taking classes related to AI and data science, which can be important for future employment. Otherwise, students might need to \"close the practical application gap themselves post-graduation,\" said Bryan Ackermann, head of AI strategy and transformation at the management consultancy Korn Ferry, in an email. WorkWorkMany Gen Z employees say ChatGPT is giving better career advice than their bosses Surveying employees periodically is an excellent way for managers to take the pulse of their workers and identify what\'s working in their department and what may need to be improved. Similarly, solving problems might be an HR manager\'s first inclination, but Haddaway said there might be more long-term value in teaching the manager how to deal with the situation on their own â a capability artificial intelligence can\'t provide.
