A recent report by Human Rights Watch, titled "We’re Dying Here," reveals the alarming state of health in Louisiana’s Cancer Alley.
This 85-mile stretch across the Mississippi River, heavily industrialized by the oil and gas industry, is sadly known for its high rates of cancer. Now it’s facing even more harrowing statistics such as triple the national average rates of birth defects, alongside chronic asthma, bronchitis, and persistent sinus infections.
This report sheds light on the dire consequences of lax oversight of the fossil fuel industry - particularly for communities of color like the predominantly-Black residents of Louisiana’s Cancer Alley. The United Nations has described this as a “sacrifice zone.”
But right now, there are plans to introduce at least 19 new fossil fuel plants in the area - which is threatening to exacerbate the health issues in these communities.
Together, we can stand up for the rights of those in Cancer Alley and work towards a future where no community is a "sacrifice zone."
