Dear Constituent,
The light rail system has, for decades, been a critical means of transportation for Maryland commuters and essential workers traveling throughout Baltimore City and its northern and southern suburbs. In November of last year alone, the Baltimore light rail provided more than 413,000 rides. However, an overhaul of the light rail fleet was long overdue.
In case you missed it, my colleagues in the Maryland Congressional Delegation and I recently announced $213 million in federal funding has been awarded to the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) to complete its Light Rail Vehicle Fleet Replacement project. This award was made possible by the work we did to pass the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
The federal funds will bolster the MTA’s ability to replace all 52 aging light rail cars in its fleet with new ones, ensuring safe, efficient, and more accessible light rail travel in the Baltimore region.
Maryland’s Congressional Team will continue to have a unified voice on ensuring the safety and efficiency of Baltimore’s light rail. To learn more about this exciting announcement, please click here.
Sincerely,
Kweisi Mfume
Member of Congress
