Protecting religious liberty in schools for students and their families, teachers, and even board members continues to be a critical battleground for our nation.
Let me share with you just some of our ongoing cases defending faith in the schoolhouse.
In Arizona, Heather Rooks proudly took office on the Peoria Unified School Board last year. But, since then, she has received extreme backlash for citing Bible verses during her designated comment time at school board meetings.
A radical secular organization sent the district a letter threatening to file a lawsuit if Heather was allowed to continue quoting Scripture.
As a result, the school board’s attorney has “advised” Heather and other members against quoting Scripture during public meetings.
But Heather is fighting back. She is standing firm not just for her own rights, but for the rights of all school board members to freely exercise their First Amendment freedoms.
Meanwhile in California, we are fighting in federal court against the California Department of Education.
We’re defending religious homeschooling families who are standing up to what can only be describe as state sponsored discrimination.
Due to state laws, charter schools designed to help homeschooling parents are preventing them from using state funds to purchase faith-based curricula, materials, and classes if they are religious.
Some of these charter schools reject credit for coursework that originates from faith-based curriculum or in which the student demonstrates a religious perspective.
One of our clients was even expelled from a charter school because they used a religious curriculum.
And finally, we have one recent bright spot in education to share. Dr. Varkey, the biology professor fired for teaching biology, just won and got his job back!
Dr. Varkey taught Human Anatomy and Physiology for nearly two decades at St. Philips College. That is, until four students walked out of his class when he stated that sex was determined by chromosomes X and Y.
Then, the college fired him.
But Dr. Varkey fought back against this wrongful termination and won! Now, he is going back in the fall to continue doing what he loves: teaching science.
In case you missed the celebration of this major victory, watch Dr. Varkey on First Liberty Live! talk about this fight and why it was a critical win for truth and freedom.
