John— We have always understood that writing gun laws and defending them in the courts was only one piece of the puzzle—and that we need to take the fight directly to the gun lobby, and to any other group undermining our safety. We’ve asked supporters like you for [ [link removed] ]donations so we could hire in-house litigators. We’ve partnered with pro bono partners at leading law firms. We’ve met with victims’ families, and we’ve pored over government regulations as they were issued. And we are filing lawsuits. Litigation is never a short-term strategy, but I’m proud to report that our cases are paying off, from straight-up victories to weathering crucial procedural hurdles. [ [link removed] ]Please make a donation today to ensure our lawyers continue to have the resources to fight the gun lobby in court. Earlier this week, we won our ghost gun case against the ATF. In short, the agency had issued a rule to ban untraceable, homemade firearms, but they left a glaring loophole that let people build unserialized AR-15 rifles at home. Now the ATF will have to treat AR-15 ghost guns the same as other guns, a huge leap forward in preventing shootings with these deadly weapons. In Buffalo, our lawsuit against social media companies and gun manufacturers for enabling a racist mass shooting is making promising strides forward. The gunman at the Tops Markets shooting had been radicalized on social media and even live streamed part of the attack. A judge just affirmed that our case can proceed against one of the defendants, with decisions on the others due shortly. We’re looking forward to our day in court. And at the Supreme Court, this week justices heard oral arguments in Garland v. Cargill, a gun lobby attempt to strike down the federal bump stock ban. Bump stocks, infamously used in the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, effectively turn semiautomatic rifles into machine guns, and extremist gun groups don’t like that bump stocks are illegal now. While it’s not a case we’re arguing—the Department of Justice argued the case—our team filed an amicus brief in support of the ban, and DOJ cited it specifically during Wednesday’s arguments. [ [link removed] ]Our litigation work is making a crucial impact, but lawsuits take significant resources to argue and win. Please make a donation to support GIFFORDS Law Center today. I’m proud to work on this team, and I’m proud to have the support of people like you. Thank you, Adam -- Adam Skaggs Chief Counsel & Vice President GIFFORDS Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence
