Weekend Reading

Dear Friend,

Thank you to everyone who has continued to call for a cease-fire and humanitarian access for Gaza! Over the past four months, we have collectively sent more than 200,000 letters to Congress and made hundreds of phone calls. Your activism is making a difference! To get more involved, join our weekly Action Hour [link removed] for updates from Gaza and resources for taking action.

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

AFSC General Secretary Joyce Ajlouny calls for cease-fire in White House meeting with Churches for Middle East Peace: [link removed] Joyce called on the Biden administration to demand an end to the genocide in Gaza and immediate action to address the terrible humanitarian crisis that is affecting more than two million people. “People across the world are rising up and demanding justice,” she said. “We hope the White House will start to listen.”

People’s State of the Union: [link removed] This Thursday, March 7, AFSC and partners will be in Washington, D.C. for the People’s State of the Union to draw attention to U.S. complicity in the genocide unfolding now in Gaza. We hope you’ll join us! Learn more and register. We also invite you to download our free posters. [link removed]

Calling on courts to safeguard children at the U.S.-Mexico border: [link removed] Migrant children are facing deplorable conditions at open air detention sites at the U.S.-Mexico border. Inadequate food and shelter, withholding of medicine, and untreated injuries are among the many examples that led advocates to file a motion in court this week. AFSC has provided photo evidence and documentation to move the complaint forward. We join in calling for immediate action to protect children’s rights. (CNN)

Tell Congress to fund the government to meet human needs: [link removed] Passing a federal budget is a fundamental responsibility of Congress. It’s up to all of us to press for it to reflect our values and priorities. Tell your representatives to fund programs that promote well-being, not war or abusive immigration enforcement.

Life in a ‘Death Trap’: How tenants rose up against a federally funded mega-landlord: [link removed] Millennia Housing Management is one of many landlords across the U.S. that get federal subsidies to rent to low-income people. But it has failed to rectify horrific living conditions in many of its complexes. Today, Millennia tenants are organizing nationwide to hold Millennia accountable, with support from AFSC and partners. (Vice)

Commemorating the 69th anniversary of “Speak Truth to Power”: [link removed] On March 2, 1955, as the Cold War escalated, AFSC’s Board of Directors approved the publication of "Speak Truth to Power." The influential document called for nonviolent alternatives to end the crisis. “Whether condemned or in a sense valued, pacifism has been considered irrelevant to the concrete problems of international relations. This study attempts to show its relevance," it stated. See the full publication.
