What Do You Want to Hear from the President?
Next week, President Biden will deliver his State of the Union Address to the American people. While I know what I want to hear from the president on the many challenges facing our country, I’d like to know what you want to hear.
What is the most important issue you want to hear President Biden address in his State of the Union Address?
Keeping the Government Open
Our budget process is broken. This week, Congress extended the deadline for the federal government’s 2024 spending levels. Passing the extension is better than a government shutdown, but it is no way to properly run things.
Next week, I will continue working with my colleagues to pass full-year spending bills.
Advocating for Real, Practical Solutions
The consequences of the current open border policies are having a major impact here in Wisconsin. The City of Whitewater is witnessing a dramatic increase in migrants flowing into the community. Last summer, I met with the Whitewater Police Chief and City Administrator, who first detailed to me the ongoing challenges in their community. They highlighted a rapid influx of individuals, many of whom had difficulties communicating in English, lacked documentation, and required considerable social services. In November 2023, Walworth County law enforcement reported that they tracked roughly $250,000 in transactions funneled to the Gulf Cartel, one of Mexico's largest drug cartels, over a four-month span.
We must act to address these issues. I am working to secure the border, protect our local communities, and fix our broken immigration system by working to enact the Secure the Border Act. This comprehensive legislation would end catch-and-release, re-institute the Remain in Mexico policy, end exploitation of parole authority, and resume border wall construction. The bill would also end family separations, address the human trafficking crisis, and increase criminal penalties for illegal entry and visa overstays.
These are real, practical solutions to the problems seen in Whitewater and across the nation.
Update from the House Floor
Now more than ever, we must stand with our Jewish friends as we witness a shameful rise in antisemitism worldwide. This week, I spoke on the House Floor to ensure Holocaust Remembrance Day continues to be recognized in the U.S. Capitol.
On Wisconsin,
Bryan Steil Member of Congress
