Almost 150 folks turned out on a gorgeous sunny evening. It was great to hear from so many constituents! For those north and west of Juneau, I'd love to hear from you over the coming days. There are details at the end of this message. January on the Senate Floor with Sen. Birch (Thanks to Seanna O'Sullivan for her photo!) Remembering Chris Anchorage Sen. Chris Birch died suddenly and unexpectedly this week. We had very different politics, but we sat next to each other on the floor and got to be friends. I'm going to miss him a lot. Chris served in the House of Representatives before getting elected to the Senate last fall. He was well reasoned and thoughtful in everything he did. He was the kind of legislator who could argue fiercely against my amendment to one of his bills on the floor one day and work hand-in-hand with me on budget issues the next—without ever losing his cool. Chris loved to hike and hit just about every trail in Juneau. He had statewide roots, having lived in Fairbanks and rural Alaska before settling in Anchorage. He was a friend of the capital city. My heart goes out to his wife Pam and all of the Birch family. Alaska's great loss is just the shadow of their grief. Juneau's newest AmeriCorps Volunteers stopped by to say hello! Capital Budget Passes (& Round 2 Vetoes) The fight to fund the essentials continues. The governor made his decisions on the capital budget yesterday. The good news is he signed the reverse sweep—restoring PCE and scholarships—and the funding to maintain roads, ferries & some state buildings. At the same time, he vetoed money for addiction treatment grants, much of the money for homeless housing, the Marine Exchange of Alaska, maintenance for University buildings, earthquake safety, and more. Some of those are mildly shortsighted, others wildly. Now the governor has until August 30 to decide whether to sign or veto the bill that funds the PFD and what we restored to the operating budget after the first round of vetoes. He's seen thousands and thousands of Alaskans speak out about his actions. I hope he'll take a more measured approach than he did in June. There's a tough road ahead of us to build the kind of Alaska future generations need. I'll keep you updated when the governor makes a decision on the operating budget later this month.
