Next week, President Biden will deliver his State of the Union address, an important moment for the country to come together and focus on the challenges we face. I chose to invite a local Dallas mom and OB-GYN, Dr. Austin Dennard, as my guest. Dr. Dennard fled Texas to receive life-saving abortion care after learning she was carrying a fetus with anencephaly, a fatal condition in which the skull and brain do not fully develop. 

I chose Dr. Dennard as my guest to honor her bravery and to shine a light on the real-life consequences of Texas’ harmful abortion ban.

I met Dr. Dennard earlier this year and was moved by her story. My wife and I had two healthy pregnancies and I cannot imagine the pain Dr. Dennard’s family went through after her diagnosis. I am so honored to have Dr. Dennard as my State of the Union guest as we work to protect the freedoms of Texas women and their right to make decisions about their own bodies.

I will never stop fighting to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would codify Roe v. Wade into federal law, as well as the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, which would codify the constitutional right to interstate travel to receive health care.
