Happy Friday, John --
Next week, we'll have the single largest
day of voting in primary season, as Super Tuesday sees over a dozen
states hosting their elections. This voting will include states large
and small from across the country.
However, the question isn't who will come
out on top, as that's more or less a foregone conclusion. Rather, the
question is how large their margin of victory will be.
An interesting development through this
primary season has been the lack of enthusiasm independent
voters are showing for both candidates. Trump hasn't managed to make
many inroads with these voters, while Biden is seeing their enthusiasm
for him wane compared to their support in 2020.
Here at Forward, we're not surprised by
this. An increasing majority of this country identifies as
unaffiliated, independent, or third party, and yet we're treated as an
afterthought. Our votes are taken for granted, with both sides
assuming we'll break for them just because the other side is worse,
not because of any outreach or concessions made to our priorities.
The legacy parties like to imagine that
independents are really Republicans or Democrats that just don't like
labels. But we, the independents, know that that isn't the case. We
have different views and different ways of thinking about problems. We
are the majority, and it's time we started organizing around our
priorities and approaches so that we can take our country back from
the extremes.
The 2020 election is important, and our
choices in the presidential race are going to be limited to the
options put forward by the legacy parties. Let's start building now so
that's not the case next cycle.
