Congress’s recent district work period gave us the opportunity to meet with local businesses that are being supported by the recently passed Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act. After returning to Washington, D.C. later in the week for votes, we spoke on the House floor in honor of the three first responders who lost their lives in Burnsville on February 18th. Read on to learn more…

We had the chance to visit Resonant Cavity, a software development company whose growth will be supported by the research and development (R&D) provisions included in the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act. As they develop and launch a vocal effects application for musicians, the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act will give them the certainty they need to innovate. 

The same afternoon, we stopped by Sportech in Elk River. Sportech designs, develops and makes products used in agriculture, power sports, golf and more. The R&D initiatives included in this legislation restore businesses’ ability to deduct research and development costs during tax season and will give Minnesota businesses the flexibility to provide good-paying jobs in our district.  

We also visited the newsroom of the Elk River Star News. While there, we met with Editor Jim Boyle to discuss developments in government funding negotiations and the importance of local journalism. As a former radio broadcaster, I understand firsthand the value of local journalism and the impact it has on the daily lives of Minnesotans.

On Thursday, we spoke on the House floor to honor the three first responders who were killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic situation in Burnsville. Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge and firefighter/paramedic Adam Finseth represented the very best our state has to offer. Their bravery and sacrifice in the line of duty led to the safe recovery of the seven children that were trapped in this hostage situation. However, this senseless tragedy will never be forgotten. Officer Elmstrand lived in Chaska with his wife and young children, and countless stories have been shared from neighbors and loved ones. All three men made an impact on their communities and we must honor their lives. We continue to pray for their families, friends and fellow first responders as we grieve the loss of these three Minnesota heroes.
