Legislative Update
Mueller Min [ [link removed] ]
The February Forecast had everyone anxious for Thursday?s report. While the short term shows a surplus caused by the 10 billion dollars in tax increases last year, the next biennium's budget is going to start with more than $1.5 billion in deficit. This report is a clear indication that we need to restore fiscal responsibility to Saint Paul and more responsibly manage Minnesotan?s tax dollars.
Introduced during Monday?s floor session was HF 4277 ? Frazier [ [link removed] ] which would REMOVE mandatory minimums for gun crimes. This would let criminals off with shorter sentences and reduced parole. In a week when Minnesotans are reeling from the actions of a criminal who illegally obtained a firearm they were not allowed to possess, Democrats think that it?s ok to let these kinds of criminals out sooner.
I was honored that I was able to attend the funeral service for our fallen first responders on Wednesday. Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, and paramedic Adam Finseth were dedicated public servants and will be greatly missed by their community. My heart goes out to the family, friends, and Minnesotans who are mourning their devastating loss. We must remember and support the brave men and women who every day risk their lives to keep us safe.
Nephew
This week?s floor sessions and committee hearings were extra special as I got to welcome my nephew to be a page for this week. The High School Page program is an opportunity for juniors to come to the capitol for a week and participate in the legislative process firsthand. If you?re ever watching House TV [ [link removed] ] you may see them helping pass out materials in committee or on the bench at the front of the House chamber.
We have a number of athletic accomplishments to celebrate from the past week. Austin High School had three individuals at the state gymnastics meet [ [link removed]*F ] with Kiki bringing home a 14th place all around score.
The state wrestling tournament is going on right now with the best from across the state competing for the podium including Diann from Southland who is competing in the women's tournament on Friday and Saturday. Bo from Blooming Prairie is also at the state meet right now to work his best for the Awesome Blossoms.
Austin High School is being represented by Sam at the state wrestling meet. Across the cities at the U of M is the state swimming and diving meet with several swimmers representing the Packers. Best of luck to all our athletes competing at such a commendable level.
Another great competition that kicks off this weekend is the First Robotics regional championships. Austin High School is on their way with Furious George, their robot that they have built and programmed to compete in a variety of challenges to take home the gold.
Coming up this weekend in district are a number of great events to get out and enjoy the improving weather with your neighbors. Of course that starts with a Fish Fry Friday at the Adams American Legion. Dinner is served from 5:30 to 7:30 at post 146. Find all the details here: American Legion Post 146 [ [link removed] ]
Saturday I?m looking forward to the Smashing Cancer Demolition Derby [ [link removed] ] at the Mower County fairgrounds. This is a fun event with proceeds going to help those fighting breast cancer. The fun starts at 1:00 pm! ?
Then to finish off the weekend is the Empty Bowl Fundraiser at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle [ [link removed] ]. Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm is the soup fundraiser to support the community food shelf. Enjoy a variety of soups and check out the collection of bowls with some being decorated by kids in the Lyle area.
