Dear Friend,
A humanitarian and human rights catastrophe is unfolding in Sudan: brutal mass violence, a looming famine, and the largest number of people fleeing their homes due to war in the world. Foreign actors are fueling both sides of the escalating horror, and they’re profiting from the gold being extracted and smuggled out in the fog of war. The Sentry’s Co-Founder John Prendergast reveals these shadowy layers underlying the conflict in his new featured piece in Foreign Affairs, “Dirty Money Is Killing Sudan.”
“The biggest difference the United States can—and must—make is to dramatically increase its financial pressure on the proxies aggravating the war,” John emphasizes, “particularly the United Arab Emirates but also Egypt, Wagner, and Iran, which has become an important arms supplier to the SAF.”
John’s essay lands just as Tom Perriello has been announced as a new US special envoy for Sudan. We applaud his appointment, which represents a desperately needed boost to peacemaking efforts in the war-shattered country. The choice of Tom Perriello, an experienced diplomat with a track-record of success in Africa, is a sign that President Biden and Secretary Blinken are escalating America's commitment to solving this crisis.
If you prefer audio, join John as he digs into all these issues in his interview on PRX "The World," which aired this week on NPR stations across the US. Listen here. Sincerely,
Charles Cater Director of Investigations |
