In recent years, the rights of transgender youth nationwide have come under attack. Extremist Republicans have penned and pushed an absurd amount of legislation that would limit or eliminate the rights of all LGBTQ+ Americans — but they seem particularly set on targeting transgender kids and teens.

Politicians at every level of government are hell-bent on policing every aspect of the lives of trans kids: they’re seeking to restrict participation in sports and deny access to essential healthcare.

These political attacks not only threaten the rights of these young people, they also endanger their mental health, social lives, and self-esteem.

Each year, nearly 2 million young people in the U.S. between the ages of 13 and 24 who identify as LGBTQ+ seriously consider suicide. They face social stigma, cultural prejudices, homophobia, and transphobia as they navigate the already turbulent years of young adulthood.

They shouldn’t also have to worry that their home state will enact legislation stripping them of their fundamental rights, but they must. Millions of kids are already being impacted by draconian laws in multiple states:

North
Carolina,
Arkansas
and
several
other
states
have
enacted
"Don't
Say
Gay"
laws,
which
ban
schools
and
educators
from
discussing
sexual
orientation
or
gender
identity;

Alabama
has
proposed
legislation
mandating
the
outing
of
gender
non-conforming
children
to
their
families;
*
Idaho
and
Louisiana
have
banned
gender-affirming
care
for
minors,
and
more
states
are
considering
it.

Like all young people, LGBTQ+ kids — including those who identify as transgender — deserve love, protection and support. We have a responsibility to enact nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people in the U.S.
