*Governor Whitmer Proclaims March 2024 as Women's History Month*  

 

*LANSING, Mich. * –* *Today Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed March 2024 as Women's History Month to uplift the achievements of women in Michigan history.   

 

“Every month, but specifically this month, we acknowledge the great women of Michigan and around the world who have paved the way for current and future generations,” said *Governor Whitmer*. “Women are the backbone of our great state. We have proven through hard times we can rise to the occasion and get things done. With the help of ambitious and committed women who want to see positive change, I will continue to advocate and stand on the front lines for women’s rights and equality.” 

 

“We are committed to working alongside Governor Whitmer, her administration and likeminded individuals to proactively uplift her message,” said *Cheryl Bergman*, *CEO* *of the Michigan Women's Commission*. By staying true to the commission's values, we aim to address controversial issues head on, celebrate accomplishments and uplift others with our voices.  

 

"As a devoted ally of change, I am proud to work with Governor Whitmer to spark conversation about racial equality and improve diversity within the leadership in the state,” said* Gloria Lara the Civil Rights Commission Chair*. “It is my goal to continue educating the mass and creating safe spaces for minorities and underrepresented individuals.” 

 

Governor Whitmer has utilized her platform to implement change and challenge outdated laws to help Michigan’s women and families. The governor will continue to be a voice for the voiceless by fighting for women’s rights to economic mobility, a quality education, and constitutional rights and freedoms.  

 

*SOME OF GOVERNOR WHITMER’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS INLCUDE:* 

 


* Repealed Michigan’s 1931 abortion ban. 
* Signed a package of bills to repeal the tax on essential menstrual products. This will drive down costs and save families from paying taxes on up to $4,800 of spending over the course of a lifetime
* Increased the Working Families Tax Credit by putting an average of $3,150 into Michiganders’ pockets and assisting more than 700,000 Michigan households. 
* Expanded access to affordable childcare for 150,000 children. 

 

*FOCUSING ON WOMEN'S HEALTH*  

 

Under Governor Whitmer’s leadership, she signed the Reproductive Health Act, passed a law hindering employers from discriminating against women because they’ve had an abortion and invested in Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies. 

 

*INCLUSTIVITITY IN THE STATE GOVERNMENT*  

 

Governor Whitmer has made sure representation is shown throughout her leadership. Currently, more than 974 women serve on boards, commissions, and full-time positions.
