Remarkable Young Leaders

On Monday, it was my privilege to announce Crawford High School senior Huston Powers' appointment to the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point. Huston exemplifies what it means to be a leader through his academic achievements and athletic talent.

ImageHuston's journey to West Point is a testament to his hard work, character, and the support of his family and community. It reflects not only his personal excellence but also our congressional district's excellence in fostering young leaders.

As Huston prepares to embark on this new chapter, I am confident he will achieve remarkable success and represent our community with honor.
Congratulations to Huston.

East Texas Charity

In a meeting with leaders from the East Texas Communities Foundation and the W.D. Kelley Foundation, we discussed the pivotal role of philanthropy in supporting our communities, particularly within the Texas 17th Congressional District. Their dedication to serving the 32 counties of northeast Texas, including Nacogdoches, Angelina, Trinity, Houston, Leon, and Freestone counties, highlights the significant impact of charitable efforts on the well-being of individuals and families.

ImageThe conversation underscored the importance of fostering an environment that encourages charitable giving and acts of selfless service while ensuring organizations can continue their vital work without undue restrictions. I support initiatives that enhance the effectiveness of philanthropy in East Texas. The work of foundations and philanthropic leaders is important, and I am proud to work with them to make a lasting difference in the lives of Texans.

State of the Border

As I reflect on the contrasting visits by President Biden to Brownsville, TX, and former President Trump to Eagle Pass, TX, it is clear that the crisis on our southern border remains a critical concern for Texans. This crisis, which encompasses the rampant issues of illegal migration, fentanyl smuggling, and human trafficking, is continuously impacting the interior of our great state.

ImageThe security of our nation and neighborhoods cannot be overstated, and it's a priority that neither I nor my Republican colleagues take lightly or wish to delay. We understand the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action. That's why, on May 11, 2023, I voted alongside House Republicans to pass H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023, a bill aimed at bolstering our border security and reforming asylum protocols.

Unfortunately, despite bipartisan recognition of the crisis, House Democrats opposed the bill, and it has yet to be addressed in the Democrat-controlled Senate. The provisions within H.R. 2 are essential to disincentivizing illegal crossings and promoting the lawful seeking of asylum at designated ports of entry. This legislation is critical for reinstating the integrity of our immigration system, which includes raising the initial screening standards for asylum seekers, restricting categorical parole grants by the DHS Secretary, mandating nationwide e-verify, and reimplementing the effective Migrant Protection Protocols (MMP).

Since securing the Majority on January 3, 2023, House Republicans have been unwavering in our message on border policy, advocating for specific, necessary changes. We've urged the reinstatement of the "Remain in Mexico" policy, a contrast to the staggering 2,063,692 migrant encounters recorded in Fiscal Year 2023 under President Biden’s watch. This number surpasses the encounters during the entire Trump administration, underscoring the effectiveness of policies like MMP.

The staggering number of migrant encounters in Fiscal Year 2023, exceeding those during the entire previous administration, starkly illustrates the consequences of inaction. Our efforts in the House to pass critical legislation like H.R. 2, which enforces stricter asylum criteria and other key security measures, are direct responses to this escalating crisis. It’s disheartening that despite bipartisan acknowledgment of the issues, this crucial legislation remains stalled in the Senate.

In light of President Biden's visit to Brownsville, it's imperative that he recognizes the severity of the situation across the entire southern border. The contrast between his low illegal immigrant encounter location and the heavily trafficked areas like Eagle Pass, visited by former President Trump, displays the current President’s lack of seriousness in addressing this issue. For real progress, we must look at the entire border, not just the sections that paint a less troubling picture.

President Biden's trip must be followed by robust action and enforcement of our laws to truly secure our border. The policies and protocols we advocate for are not just legislative items—they are necessary tools to safeguard our communities and uphold the integrity of our immigration system. I urge the President to consider the comprehensive measures that House Republicans have proposed, measures that are vital for the safety and security of our nation. It is time to move beyond visits and into decisive, effective action for the sake of all Americans.
