Keeping Hoosiers Safe: Coronavirus

Throughout the week, Governor Holcomb provided daily updates to Hoosiers about how Indiana is responding to the coronavirus pandemic. 

Check out some of the actions Governor Holcomb and his team have taken below to keep Hoosiers safe:

• In order to keep vulnerable Hoosiers safe, Governor Holcomb has asked us to hunker down and stay at home. Traffic on Indiana roads was down 41% yesterday compared to the same day last year.
• Access to Indiana's great government service continues remotely, including welfare and unemployment applications.
• Governor Holcomb is continuing to enforce carry-out and delivery options only for restaurants in Indiana. Please continue to support your local restaurants options during this time.
• Restaurants with liquor licenses can sell alcohol for carryout consumption.
• The Department of Workforce Development has suspended the one-week waiting period that is required before paying unemployment benefits. 
• Department of Correction inmates are now working on producing personal protective equipment, including face masks and protective gowns.
• The Indiana State Department of Education (DOE) and Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) are teaming up to encourage schools to provide limited child care services to the children of emergency and other essential workers.
• Hoosiers with chronic health issues will be able to receive a 90-day supply of their non-controlled prescription medication.  
• The Indiana Economic Development Corporation has spoken with more than 1,000 businesses and economic development agencies in the last five days about ways to continue supporting the state’s economy. More than 135 companies have been fully vetted as being able to help, such as shifting production to make necessary medical and protective equipment.
• The Indiana National Guard are being deployed to six food banks across the state to help sort and pack food for distribution.
• The Office of Community and Rural Affairs announced Community Development Block Grant funds may be redirected to assist with COVID-19 needs, such as assistance for small businesses.

Congress Passes Relief for Americans

This week, Congress passed the CARES Act, a $2 trillion package to help Americans, and it was just signed by President Donald Trump!

The CARES Act includes:

• $500 billion in emergency loans for businesses & municipalities that have been affected by the coronavirus.
• $350 million for small business to help them meet payroll and keep Americans employed.
• Will increase unemployment by $600 per week for 4 months.
• Americans will receive a one-time check of $1,200 and $500 per child.
• $150 billion is dedicated to hospitals and medical centers treating coronavirus patients.

• Senator Young: “This emergency relief package is designed to help Hoosier families, workers, job creators, healthcare heroes on the front lines, patients, and everyone who has suffered through no fault of their own. Now that an agreement has been reached, we must immediately get this critical relief into the hands of people who need it most...We are going to get through this by working together, and we are going to come out stronger.”
• Senator Braun: "The coronavirus impacts our health and our economy, and I will be supporting this assistance package which provides massive assistance for our hospitals, reaches out to directly help workers keep their jobs & give immediate help to those who lost their jobs, and provides the largest Main Street assistance program in history for small business owners to keep their doors open, which I was personally involved in securing.”
