Our Commonwealth has been indelibly shaped over the centuries by the contributions of women. From First Lady Abigail Adams to abolitionist Philis Wheatley, to TV icon Mindy Kaling to our first female Governor, Maura Healey, it is no exaggeration to say that women’s history is Massachusetts history.

Today, as your House Democratic Whip and a proud member of Massachusetts’ congressional delegation, I am honored every day to serve the people of this state alongside women whose intelligence, capability, and fortitude never ceases to inspire me – among them Congresswomen Lori Trahan and Ayanna Pressley and Senator Elizabeth Warren. Throughout my career, I have been inspired by the fearless leadership of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, whose tenure in House leadership was a masterclass in courageousness, confidence, and poise. Together, Democratic women are working to shape the dialogue of our nation and advance our values.

But it was barely a century ago that women did not have the right to vote in this state or any state — despite all the ways they had already shaped our politics. Even after the ratification of the 19th Amendment, women of color had to fight for decades further to be granted their own universal suffrage. 

Recent events have forced us to recognize that even the rights we as women hold most dear are not guaranteed. The Trump Supreme Court’s reversal of our long-held reproductive freedom was one of the most shameful days in our recent history. Now, we must fight back. We must elect leaders who will enshrine abortion access into our nation’s constitution, who believe women should make their own health care decisions, and who will stand up for every person’s liberty — no matter their age, race, sexuality, or religion. Leaders who know that our diversity is our strength.

Today, and every day, I am proud to be a Democratic woman from Massachusetts, to stand with a party that knows women are an essential part of our nation’s past and future, and to call a state home that has been so profoundly shaped by women’s history.
