North Carolina's 5 open congressional seats

drawing candidates in droves

Manistee News Advocate | Gary D. Robertson, Associated Press

February 29, 2024

With five members of North Carolina's U.S. House delegation declining to run this year, next week's primaries have attracted dozens of Republican candidates seeking what could become extended time on Capitol HIll.

Some of the turnover can be attributed to redistricting - the REpublican-controlled General Assembly last fall approved districts skewing rightward, prompting Democratic Reps. Jeff Jackson, Kathy Manning, and Wiley Nickel to forgo reelection bids.

Compared to a map drawn by state judges for 2022 elections that resulted in Democrats and Republicans winning seven congressional seats each, the latest map makes it likely the GOP will win at least 10 of the 14 seats, according to election data. These seat flips could benefit national Republicans trying to retain what is now a fragile House majority in 2025.

WG Economy: The President's State

of the Union Challenge

WG Economy | David Winston

February 28, 2024

The President's State of the Union address is coming up next week on March 7. White House operatives view this as a reset moment and the biggest opportunity that the President has to make his re-election case on a national stage. Politico reports that one of the themes he will emphasize is food inflation, blaming price gouging, and corporate greed.

Since the most recent inflation report showing inflation still over 3%, our new numbers for Winning The Issues (February 24-25, 1000 registered voters) show the President's economic job approval has not budged since the end of last year. Our numbers show his handling of the economy is underwater at 35-59 approve-disapprove, having been at 37-55 in December.

WG Discussion Points: Current Trending

Of Wages Versus Inflation

WG Discussion Points| David Winston

February 23, 2024

As President Biden goes into his re-election campaign, one of the biggest challenges he faces is convincing voters that he has made progress on inflation. In reaction to last week's concerning inflation report that CPI remains above 3%, the White House has tried to emphasize other aspects of inflation and wages, making the statement that the "report shows that wage growth has been the strongest of any economic recovery in 50 years." While hourly and weekly wages have recently begun to outpace inflation in the past year, weekly wages fell behind inflation in this last report. Overall the cumulative price increases that consumers are experiencing have resulted in their purchasing power (based on either hourly or weekly wages) not keeping up.
